All About Pocket Knives

Found this no name knife that needs new scales. I will be using black Delrin and jigging them. The 2 blades are in Good shape and the file is ok too.

This should be a fun little project.

Be sure and post pics. Be fun to see the process.

Hey, how about posting where you get the material and some of the "why's and how's" (cost, thickness etc) concerning the handle material.
Post up some good pics of your jigging operation and such. Carry us thru the whole experience..... this will be a fun thread!

This should be a good learning experience for me. I have a couple of knives I want to "restore" to the original look with Delrin handles.

I got the delrin from McMaster Carr. it only comes in Black and White from them. There is a wide variety of thickness to choose from. https://www.mcmaster.com/acetal-homopolymer-sheets

I will be sure to document this better than my others. I am still in my infancy of redoing knives. Tonight's plans are to get the scales fit to the frames, (not sure that is the correct terminology). Also I will be trying to clean the 2 blades up more. I will try to sand out most of the big scratches and go to a 10 micron finish with wet dry paper.

Last night I cleaned the blades up. I only went to 600. The scratches were deeper than I thought. So I did not want to remove more material. I also reshaped the tips of the blades.

Today I had a bit of time at work so I thinned down the Delrin to .080 thick and fit to length. Tonight I hope to jig the scales and assemble.

I will take more pictures of jigging.

It should be fun jigging. I just use a dremel and a carbide bit. Not sure what bit yet. I will try a few out.

Here are a few in process pictures.

Picture 1 is first pass of jigging before removing hair. Second pic is pass 1 hair removed. I repeated this process 2 more times. Getting in between previous jigs. I did not want to go to far at once. Also cleaning up between passes allows me to see where to add more.

Third picture is finished jigging. The last is the burr I used. I held the dremel at 30 degrees from parallel when jigging allowing the burr to walk a bit. I also varied pressure to get variation in depth.

Next step I just did was mount the scales with some acetate tape. It is super sticky and only .001 thick. I am hoping this will hold enough to shape them to the brass.

Scales are shaped and blended.

I used my beater belt sander to shape the scales and my western whittler to blend and radius everything.

I marked the knife with my brand and date.

It is getting dark now so I will have to finish assemble y tomorrow after work.

Very nice job on the jigging!

Thank you. I am not book smart. I could read something 20 times and not understand squat. But let me do it once and I will understand. I love working with my hands

I am so thankful that they still had industrial arts in high school when I went. Graduated in 1980. There was no way I could have made a living without it. I feel so sorry for the youth today that cannot excel in structured education geared towards college. Progress really sucks for people like myself.
