All About Pocket Knives

I finally purchased a "headspinner" for finishing rocker pin heads, and this was my first attempt. I probably should have tried one a long time ago. This is a 99 1/2 that I just rehandled with wenge. It may not suit everyone's taste, but I'm ok with the outcome. I was hoping the spinner would produce the perfectly round heads like I see on some factory original knives, and don't know why mine produced the particular shape that you can see in the pictures. Maybe there is some trick to using it that I need to learn. (Also, my skill at repinning the old shields obviously needs some work.)

I get good domed pins with mine, but mine are carbide and came from the Camillus factory.
Did you use any lubrication on the pin when you spun it?
My success rate jumped from 30% to 95% when I started using Ultra Lube, a cutting gel. It is thicker and stays on the pin better than a cutting oil, and it works much better than cutting oil.

One fellow from Camillus told my that you "HAD" to use some type of lube.

Could you post a picture of the spinner, looking down into the concave? That could help with somebody giving you a more informed answer.

Thanks. I bought the spinner from Jantz. https://www.knifemaking.com/product-p/kv250.htm I was using the larger end, but I have attached pics of both ends. Now that I look into that end with a magnifier, I think I can see what produces that little "dimple" in the center of the finished pin head. Next time, I think I will experiment with stopping just short of fully engaging the spinner with my drill press.

If you have a diamond ball bur that is the proper size, you may be able to grind that dimple down or it doesn't leave a mark, or at least not such a pronounced one.
