All About Pocket Knives

Looking to pick this up but can't find any info online. My reference book is packed away currently, so any help is appreciated.

Appears to be a customized/modified Schrade knife,,,,re-handled

This has 3 patent dates, 1900 to 1916.
The celluloid handle is not looking like someone’s home project.

The knife design appears uncommon, based on my memory...

This is the large 5” model.

While I have owned a few Schrades, I am still a newbie. I have not seen an example with no scales before to compare the mechanism.

Again, I do not have this in hand, working from owners pics.
It appears to have no lock? Was there a period when locks were not available, post 1916?

The other interesting thing is no bolsters, couldn't find another example online. Not sure what that does to joint strength.


Just realized the seller also has another knife for potential sale that has had custom scales added to it, so maybe they were both done at the same time by the same craftsman. Both have been in th family since the early 20's. I know, a little slow processing

The slide lock is missing on the knife because it relies on the handle material to retain it in the slot , the mechanism is correct but the knife has been re- handled.

Seller bailed on me, oh well.

You dodged a bullet. That knife was sold on ebay awhile back and I was pretty sure that it would be returned when the buyer realized it had been customized/re-handled by a former owner. It does look interesting and I can see why some people were fooled by it. It has little real value. It would be worth $50-75 for parts, or whatever someone is willing to pay to admire it, but that's about it. I was tempted to buy it to use in my "Altered Knives" chapter of my next book, but I wouldn't want to pay more than $100 even for that purpose.

Handled badly and rebladed. Also the tab is broken off of the cylinder. Curious what he wanted for it though?

Ended up selling for 180, but I suspect it's not the last we'll see of this knife.
