Superstition: GEC Pattern 13
GEC makes several different knives in the #13 Pattern, including the "Whip", "Speaker Jack", and "Congress". I was wondering if anyone here would not carry one of those simply because the pattern number was 13.
For me, it's simply the next number after 12. Doesn't bother me. Anyone else want to chime in?

Re: Superstition: GEC Pattern 13
I wouldn't carry one but only because I'm not attracted to the pattern.
When I first started my current job in 1990 we had a Vice President who was superstitious about the number 13. I didn't know that and I had to go up to his office to see him once. I was wearing a t-shirt commemorating the 13 year anniversary of a local motorcycle club. It had a number 13 on it that was about 7 inches tall. It's the first thing you saw when you looked at the shirt.
One of my coworkers told me that I better not go up there with that shirt on and explained why. I didn't have any choice so I went up there anyway. We talked and he never mentioned my shirt or the number 13 but apparently, he was well known for his superstition.
That's the only person I've ever met that might have been superstitious about the number 13.

Years ago, I had a customer who collected serialised knives with the serial number thirteen—he considered it to be his “lucky” number.
In a similar vein, I once knew a knife dealer in the midwestern United States who regularly bought and sold Puma brand knives. He absolutely refused to buy or sell any Puma Gelders because their model number (666) was prominently etched on the main blade. Apparently, people can be just as superstitious about the number 666.
As the saying goes, different strokes…

That will always be a disturbing number sequence to me.

Re: Superstition: GEC Pattern 13
The number 13 is a pretty common superstition. For example, there is Friday the 13th. Some hotels skip the number 13 when numbering their floors. Some people won't stay on the 13th floor if the hotel has one.
The most popular source of the superstition has it's roots in the Christianity:
"Some believe this is unlucky because one of those thirteen, Judas Iscariot, was the betrayer of Jesus Christ. From the 1890s, a number of English language sources relate the "unlucky" thirteen to an idea that at the Last Supper, Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, was the 13th to sit at the table."

I don't really think of myself as being superstitious but that number does make me uneasy.Greenman wrote:Years ago, I had a customer who collected serialised knives with the serial number thirteen—he considered it to be his “lucky” number.

I had a cell phone once that would let you dial a number from your contacts list my spelling out their name. Just start typing their name using the letters above the numbers on the keypad. I had momma listed in my contacts as “mom”. One day I just happened to notice that on a phone “mom” is 666!Paladin wrote:I don't really think of myself as being superstitious but that number does make me uneasy.Greenman wrote:Years ago, I had a customer who collected serialised knives with the serial number thirteen—he considered it to be his “lucky” number.

I busted out laughing. My wife and my dad thought it was funny. Momma was not amused. Lol

Re: Superstition: GEC Pattern 13
For me the number 13 has always held a special significance...my sister was born on 3/13, I was born on 3/13, my brother who is 13 years older than me was born on 5/13. That's 3 of us born on the 13th Then that same brother died on 3/13...
I have since kind of embraced the connection. I quit smoking cigarettes many years ago on 3/13, and have used that date as a start/end date for other life events. I even have a tattoo on my inner arm, and my user name here is 313 Mike...
...I am not necessarily "suspicious" about the number, but there have undoubtedly been some significant life events for me that have the number 13 involved. Some good, some bad. So for me I definitely feel some sort of a connection, and rather than be wary of it I have chosen to embrace it for whatever it is.
Regarding the question in the original post, I do not have a GEC pattern 13, but would certainly not shy away from one if it was a pattern I liked. It would actually be quite fitting for me to tote a 13 knife of some sort! I have always kept my eyes open for just the right one but have not found it yet....

There is a high rise building full of condos in Tulsa that I have done and continue to do remodels on, it was built in the 60's and "skips" the 13th floor. I've always thought it was silly, not calling it the 13th floor doesn't change that it is the 13th floor. Superstition is not for me, unless it's Stevie Wonder.
