HSB & Co. and EC Simmons

Postby Duffer » Fri Dec 07, 2018 7:56 pm

Here are a couple of small jacks that I have been meaning to post for a few months now. The top one is an EC Simmons St. Louis marked sleeveboard Jack. IT is 3 & 3/8 inches closed. It has nice pick bone handles, three hand hammered pins and with very full blades that have been sharpened but otherwise shows little use. Nice action with half stops. Question who made this folder for EC Simmons Hardware Co?

Next one is a HSB & Co Chicago marked regular jack. It is 3 & 1/4 inches closed. This one also has nice pick bone handles with some blade loss on primary blade and the pen blade looks full. Four hand hammered pins. This one has great action, solid lock up and crisp half stops. This one looks NYK Company made to me by the looks of the pick bone and the shield.

Thanks for looking and for your input and comments!!

I would say you are correct about the HSB. ::tu:: The KK could be Walden.

I’m no help with ID’ing makers - but they are beautiful jacks Lloyd ::nod:: ::tu:: ::tu:: ... That jigged bone is awesome on both - that color is just “rich” and the jigging very cool 8) ....

2 lovely knives, Lloyd! ::tu:: As Lee said, rich colour and interesting jigging, which, to me, has the appearance of being old? As Roger said, I would also guess the EC Simmons was likely Walden made.

Lovely old knives Lloyd. My favorite bone.
I suspect this is the typical Walden Handle Company handles?
I agree with Dan and Roger as Walden Knife Company was absorbed by E C Simmons .

Thanks Roger, Lee, Dan, Lyle, Joe, David, OC and Cal for your very nice comments!! Thanks Dan and Lyle for suggesting the EC Simmons may be Walden made ::tu:: I have another Walden folder with very similar pick bone handles now you mention it. These two have very similar type pick bone handles and I thought for awhile they both might be NYKC made with the exception of some minor comtruction differences. They both are certainly from the same era and share very similar characteristics and stylistic cues. Thanks again gentlemen!

Lloyd, sorry to be a nitpicker, but Roger was the first to mention the Walden possibility for the EC Simmons knife.
I also like Lyle's observation of the possibility of the Walden Knife Handle Co. being the maker of the bone on these.

Dan you’re right—thanks Roger for first suggesting the EC Simmons might be Walden made. I appreciate your help Roger and thanks to you Dan and Lyle for also suggesting Walden as the possible cutlery co.!!
