Shapleigh Hardware axe / hatchet USMC

Stopped in at a local military memorabilia shop this weekend. Hatchet is marked right and look good as far as the Diamond Edge Shapleigh Hardware logo. And as far that goes so did the USMC logo. Was told it was WW1. But it is a bite pricey, was hoping to do a little research but can find nothing on the web, so far. Sorry I didn't get photo's. What if anything do you all know ?
