All About Pocket Knives

I bought this one a while back, nothing special knife wise it's a pen/ quill knife. What caught my attention is the unusual bolsters, I like unusual

The knife arrived and upon close inspection the center piece of the bolster looks like a piece of meteorite I tested it with a magnet and it is magnetic! Very unusual bolster design and very attractive in my eyes, what say you?

Wonderful knife, which looks quite old, late 1800s???
Any hint of a blade mark?

Mid to late 1800's sounds about right.

Nothing at all for a stamp, even though it looks like it was repinned the blade fits perfectly and has the same patina as the rest of the knife.

Handles are ivory.

Very interesting to say the least Dimitri .. Neal beat me to the question - inquiring minds - any remnant of a stamp - never mind I just saw the reply ... The meteorite if indeed it is such is very cool ... The color looks right!! - guess you ruled out it may be a piece of rock with a fair amount of iron?? .. I had read somewhere but really don’t know if it holds any truth at all - but some very old American made Bowie knives may have had blades made of meteorite - probably fable - if I remember it may have been regarding James Black where there is way more story telling rather than fact ..

Nice knife MB.

Proud-headed pins on 18th and 19th century folders does not necessarily indicate a repinning. Some makers just did it that way. Not sure it isn't better than flush pins.

And how does one test a piece of stone for magnetic properties when it is closely overlying a piece of iron or steel?

My first thought was a custom made knife, rather old. The pins look brass? What are the bolsters made of?

I wouldn't know a meteorite if it bit me.Does patent stag bite?

Look at the picture with the blade open, it's no where near the " meteorite" , the bolster is non magnetic so I took a small round magnet to test it.

Also I am in no way stating for a fact that this is a genuine meteorite it would have to be tested and the knife would be ruined with such a test. I do have a small piece of meteorite that is genuine and the surface is very similar to the item on the bolster whatever it is.
