Notice the long main blade made possible by a mere catchbit.

How true that is, Lee, thanks to you. I came across that knife a couple of days ago and thought of you.

Charlie C. once told me that old time cutlers took pride in fitting the longest blades possible into pen knives. The op knife could absolutely not have longer blades.

Good point KJ!! In fact I think fitting the longest blade possible in the knife goes for any pattern... best example I have is an old IXL Hunter in essentially unsharpened condition - the space between the tip of blade and end of handle well (or holllow as the technically correct term) is literally 1/32”
...

Here is that Wostenholm in French Ivory that Lee was referring to.
Lee kindly gave me this knife sometime back and it is a real beauty.
It does look nice with this Blyde.

I once owned, but apparently never photographed, an Edwin Blyde four blade, stag handled penknife that had no bolsters. It was stone-cold mint.
I never really could figure out its exact age, as there appears to be knives, so marked, made in the 19th century and the name revised by someone in the 20th.
It was a beautiful knife, as is that pearl handled one Joe posted.
Seems like there was another Blyde Cutlery, too. Forget the name. John maybe.
