All About Pocket Knives

Hi... I'm just in the process of cleaning some paint from the bone scales of an old New York Knife Co knife. It is a scout pattern with a master blade, bottle opener/screwdriver, can opener, and punch. It has an fancy shield engraved 'Army Knife'. The master tang is stamped with 'Hammer Brand' and a flexed arm and hammer. The bottle opener is tamped 'New York Knife Co Walden'. The master has two nail nicks a long one at the tang end and a curved one towards the tip. This seems quite unusual to me. No pics until the weekend, but I would appreciate any info you have. No info on the double nail nicks, but I was right behind you in the bidding for that knife and it sure looks like you got a steal on it. I really wanted to bid more, but I had my eye on another knife that I also lost.

Hi msteele6. It is looking pretty good. The bone is great...no cracks. All the attachments are tight and snappy except for the master which is lazy especially on closing. The blade is generally full but quite scratched. The double nail nicks does have me slightly confused. s-k

Entirely up to you my friend, but I'll suggest you post this in Knife Lore, as I believe a couple guys in there could help with information.

There is another one of these for sale on Ebay. It looks to be identical to yours, however, I can't quite make out whether there is another nail nick under the swedge.

You could undoubtedly ask the seller and find out.

s-k, you've probably already seen, it but this Ebay item (290186758934) has the same blade as your knife.

I figured the blade was correct, but this certainly confirms it.

A second nick is usually cut into a blade because another blade folds in front of the existing nick or pull, blocking access.
