All About Pocket Knives

I thought I would show a picture of some knives that don't get very much attention. My wife started collecting Buttonhook knives several years and she has Hooked me on them. The top knife is stamped Friedman and Lauterjung. 1864-1908 They formed Electric Cutlery Co. in 1889. Friedman and Lauterjung is a very rare stamp to find and this the nicest example I have ever seen. This knife is in near mint condition. It is a split backspring whittler with a Button hook blade.
The second knife is stamped Waltham Cutlery Co. Circa 1910
The third knife is stamped J.B.F. Champlin. 1882-1886 Became Cattaraugus Cutlery Co.
These 3 knives represent the 3 main patterns for Buttonhook knives.
We collect them because we find them interesting and they are fairly inexpensive compared to other knives.
I am always looking to buy additional ones.

I had a request to show a few more examples so I will do so.

Those are beautiful . I really like the whittler version. I have a few old Sheffield button hook knives. These two have ivory handles. I can't make out the stamp on the master of the first knife. The hook has the kettle mark of Jos Haywood. The second knife is only about 2.5 inches long and was made by John Blyde. s-k

Super nice collection. I bet Mike aka: galvanic1882 will flip over the JBF, Electric and F&L knives. He is crazy for them as well. keep them coming. I love OLD knives.

This Victorian smoker's knife has a button hook along with blades, file, pricker, pipe tamper and cigar cutter. s-k

PAKNIVES told me about the JBF Champlin knife and he was right, I would love to own that one. My main collecting is JBF Champlin items hence the galvanic1882 name. Galvanic was used by JBF before Cattaraugus and to compete with Electric Cutlery of Freidmann & Lauterjung fame, he was a salesman for them.

Attached is a picture of two etched Electric's New Jersey marked and a 3 blade stag Freidmann & Lauterjung.

Great looking knives. If you ever want to sell the JBF please keep me in mind.

I found one more button-hook knife. It's an old pic. This one is from the 1880s. It is a champagne pattern. The handle is nickel silver with advertising at one time that is now undecipherable. The tang is stamped Staines which must be a merchant's mark. The stout serrated blade is for breaking the wires holding champagne corks. The worm is perfect. s-k
