All About Pocket Knives

This is a 1984 Sowbelly. Very nice F&F. Near mint [no box]. It may be common, but I still get impressed with a knife in this condition that is 34 years old.

It sure is a nice knife QS. The condition is great; the etch is strong and I don't see much evidence of use. However, we probably shouldn't be too impressed because it seems our hobby is awash with pristine knives of that vintage. I wasn't collecting back then but isn't that about the time that buying pocket knives to collect rather than use started to really grow?

I'm pretty sure most of us are in the "own 'em but don't use 'em" category, with EDC knives being a small fraction of our inventory. That's one of the things that makes finding and owning an HOK so attractive to lots of us. We recognize that those knives, warts and all, can tell stories about things other than life in a drawer or a safe.

You are right Dennis. I realize there are a quite a few older minty knives around, but I still get enthusiastic about finding one of these in a brand and pattern I am interested in. I have to admit that older used knives don't hold much interest for me unless they are in excellent condition. I respect them, but not much attraction there. I did not grow up using pocket knives or even getting exposure to the classics:schrade, queen, ulster, S&M etc. etc. Didn't start collecting until I was 60. So my affinity for the old ones [used] just isn't there. I realize most of the members esteem the vintage knives of even modest condition. They can connect many associations with them. I will just have to slog along with the bright and shiny knives that draw my eye like a crow. I will do so guiltily but happily.

Nice knife. That one is rarer than you think. These were made in 4 different blade configurations. Only 36 were produced in each blade configuration. Even though they are dated 1984 they weren’t actually produced until 1991 after Jim Parker purchased the rights to the bulldog name.
Doubtful you will find a higher quality knife of any brand.
