All About Pocket Knives

Cut a limb of mulberry I believe and carved out my first spoon with my Case seahorse whittler. Sand it down a little. It's out of green wood so I'm going to try and dry it in the microwave. Hopefully it doesn't crack.
Anyone else carve spoons? Any advice? Thanks It's a little crude but I'm happy.

I seen those! That would have been a whole lot faster and easier. I may have to invest in one.

I do.....Grapeseed Oil. Glad I was your inspiration....so honored!!!

I must try this grape seed oil having read of it elsewhere as well. I usually soak mine down in mineral oil? Have you used mineral oil? How do the two compare?

Good work. Put the spoon in a brown paper bag with its own shavings. Remove daily and oil with your choice of oil. After about a week it will have stabilized, and will be much safer than a mechanical drying.

I have not heard of grape seed oil. Food safe butcher block oil or mineral oil after it dries. I agree to put it in a bag with the wood chips and then put it up in the floor joist x's. As for microwaves, I have done that for a few minutes to kill insects in certain species of wood. Also did it too warm designers clay to be able to do a lay out for my mermaids tail.

My first spoon, done back in the day (about 1986). I think this one is pine. Salad bowl finish on this one.

This isn't really a spoon. It's fun to see what you end up with when you start shaping a piece of wood.

Ain't that the truth. What starts and that plan degenerates quickly with the first miss cut or breakage. But then you get to adapt.

Okay. I know this is an older thread, but last time I was on AAPK (Almost 10 yrs ago) this sub-forum did not exist.

Here are a few of mine. All carved from green paper birch or Rowan (mtn ash). For the bowl I use a modified mora hook knife and a modified Haida style hook knife, and a Scandinavia grind blade for the general carving. None of these are sanded, but left with a blade cut finish.

Left to air dry for a few weeks, then soaked in Raw flax oil. It’s food safe and will setup in the wood. They won’t stain.

Re, air drying wood. Many put the wood and wood chips in a brown paper bag. up in rafters to dry.

I’ve always just left the fully carved spoon in a cupboard for a week. In my part of the country, it’s generally low humidity. Maybe the wood chips is needed in high humidity areas?

As for the new hook knife you got for Christmas, you may find that you need to modify the top of the grind a bit. Rounding that area into a nice convex shape, rather than an acute angle will give a bit more clearance for the cutting edge. If you get “chatter” when doing your cuts, you will know that the top of the grind is in the way. This is hard to explain in words!!
