All About Pocket Knives

The EXECUTIVE DESK CHUM USA stainless steel. ruler, protractor. Decimal Equivalents. I have had this awhile. The front part of the sheath had almost all of the thread torn. I sat and removed the bad thread and hand stitched it, took awhile. Don't know who made these. a few listed as 1950's era.

Wow, that's pretty neat. I've never seen one before. Is that the brand name or is that just what they're commonly referred to?

Man, that is a cool piece. That kinda thing is right up my alley. I was a draftsman for years and I just LOVED devices like yours.

I had picked up a couple of them whilst accumulating letter openers when pocket knives and straight razors were becoming hard to find. Almost addictive as knives.

I typed in "EXECUTIVE DESK CHUM" and about 8-10 of those guys showed up.

A couple of 'em even have the sheath.

Those are quite interesting and look to be useful. I have this thingie on one of my everyday key chains and it is high quality. Japanese, I think.

Nice one Cal! I had one by Ibberson like that but the back spring was broken. Don't know where it went. Here is my favorite: American Knife Co. Plymouth CT with a folding brass ruler patent date of 1876.

My Dad had one of the OP letter-openers and it came to my home at some time.

Now, I have no idea where it might be. I haven't seen it in thirty years.

It had Raybestos advertising on it.

10-4 mrwatch.... I understand what it means when you say, "hardly get to your bench." This has been a BUSY summer. Grand kids get first dibs on spare time.

I don't think Ray has just one of anything - but he has a bunch of everything!

BTW I have at least one of those Ibersson "Chesterman" folding ruler knives somewhere too. Like Charlie, haven't seen it in years.

Found this advertisement in "Dun's Review" form 1952. So the Executive Desk Chum was marketed by "The Executive Line" of New York City and they clearly made lots of brand-able desk set items. I got one from Paul Paneky & Co food distributors in Mobile, AL for my collection and may get more (cuz they are cool!)

My wife gave me a Chelsea ships clock for a wedding present. I just bought myself a Chelsea barometer for a family Christmas present this past year.

I grew up near the Waltham watch factory and the Howard clock company and work a mile from the Chelsea clock company.

Does anybody know what this little scale is on the Executive Desk Chum?
It has the numerals 1 through 5 with halfway dashes in between.

I can't help with your question L.F., but to AAPK, and stick around, someone who knows what the scale is for will be along eventually.

Just FYI folks, the OP from sawsyon is almost two years old and hasn't checked in here since shortly after making that post.

I just posted the Ibberson Chesterman ruler knife because in my earlier post I said "I have one around here somewhere". And I found it - naturally, while looking for something else.

DUH! Thanks Ken, I saw the thread had action and that's why I checked it, but I definitely need to be a bit more astute when it comes to reading when the post was made.

I finally figured out what this scale is:The protractor is graduated in increments of 5 degrees.If the angle you are measuring falls somewhere between these 5 degree marks,the 1-5 scale will measure the exact angle to 1/2 degree.It reads like the barrel of a micrometer;whatever mark lines up with the mark nearest the 5 degrees added or subtracted from it is the exact angle. I probably didn't make it too clear but if you know how to read a micrometer or a Vernier caliper you will know what I mean.
