All About Pocket Knives

Went to the mailbox a few minutes ago and found this. Great Eastern Cutlery #152118 Bail & Chain Tidioute Cutlery Huckleberry Boys Knife Antique Yellow Jig Bone. This is my first GEC JIGGED bone knife. It is great. The pull is about a 6. Chain is bright and shiny.

BTW, the chain is attached to the bail with a split-ring, so it would be really easy to remove the chain from the bail.

Congrats - Very nice. Going to have maybe grab one of these bail & chain 15's. I don't think your going to see GEC do one of these for quite a while, if again.
Some people were complaining about how much it added to the cost. But if you think about the extra labor in making the end pieces, assembly, finishing, and installing - it's a lot of work.

I like them but I wish they were 2 blades, I've only bought one 15 this run and confirmed the single blade 15's are too small for me.

I'm with you John, I also prefer two blades. In this particular pattern a spear and pen would tickle my fancy.

Here is my just received #15 "Boys' Knife" with "Antique Yellow Jigged Bone" and a bail & chain. The bail is just a piece of shaped wire but perhaps this is true to the pattern being inexpensive so a boy might be able to buy one ? The "Antique Yellow Jigged Bone" was used on a #15 from 2015 and it is much more attractive than the jigged bone of the same name on this 2018 #15.

I really like this knife. The history and nostalgia is appealling to me. I've carried it several days since I've had it and cant complain. Most my knives have easy duty now days. The chain didnt limit my ability to use the knife. If it had I usually have another that isnt tethered to do the job. I didnt have any of those situations so far. I wont be carrying it all the time but it will be fun the carry once in a while.

Great that it is working out for you David. My estimate was that the chain was sufficiently long to preclude any hindrance.

I got a bail and chain in ebony and I like the idea of it but doubt I will carry it much.
That won’t stop me from maybe getting a jigged bone one or one of the M&G with 2 blades.

Worth every penny, serious walk and talk, the way old knives were made 100 years ago.

The ebony on this run has been exceptional.
I have a one arm jack from 2014 that is a bit streaky, this can add character but it isn’t what most expect from ebony.

I love the look of jigged bone on these barehead 15’s but for carry knives I like a bolster on them.

This has been a great run of 15’s and I’m super happy with the ones I’ve scored so far.

willc, I am reminded that years ago I received an ebony handled knife. I was disappointed to see a white streak which, in my ignorance, I took to be a major defect. I returned the knife and received another with no streaks. I've learned of course that the streaking is completely natural but still prefer all black.

The ebony wood available now is 'farmed' wood: trees have space and grow quickly so wood is not tightly grained.
The ebony we see on 100 year old pocket knives came from harvest of ebony trees growing wild in the forest. The much slower growing conditions yield a tight grain and jet black color.
There are a few stashes of old ebony wood so some of knives made today do get handled with the old growth tight grain black ebony. These are custom knives as likely it is too expensive to buy enough of this very limited amount of old ebony for a run of knives.

I love this little knife. It lives in the pocket of my overalls. Love the way the chain attaches to those big metal buttons. I’m not a GEC collector but I can see why some people are. I wish I could find more of these loops.
I think a two blade sway back jack aka “Loom Fixer” or “New England Whaler” would be awesome with this chain.
