All About Pocket Knives

I have a Case 6292 where the main blade has a bent tip. What's the proper way to fix this? (Click on the photos to get a closer look)

Send it back if you can my friend. Not sure that is fixable without breaking the blade.

I have never had any decent luck with trying to bend a blade back into shape. As Jerry said, usually results in a broken blade.

Funny how easy they'll bend out of shape, but try and bend it back

I'm wondering why it can't be heated-up with a torch a little bit and then S-L-O-W-L-Y bent back into shape. Anyone?

I've straightened a few slightly bent tips, using a jeweler's anvil and a small hammer. Well, by straighten, I mean get it straighter than it was, but not fully straight. Be careful with the steels--I had some pretty bad results with a Browning USA lockback--it was hardened to the point it was brittle, and broke with a light strike.

I can't help but I hope you get it bent back, Mike.

Hey Mike , I have Tapped a Few Bent Tips, I am Not sure about the heat Part thou, Must have been soft to begin with else it wouldn't have bent , I Use a stiddy / Anvil and a Jewelers 2oz Ball peen and work from the edge up , The Edge up Mike .. slowly rolling tip flat , starting in front of bend working back , repeat several passes Light tapping working your way further up with each PASS, don't square off on it till your flat .. I have straightened two bent tips also. A small hammer with a couple of smart taps and I straightened them satisfactorily.
That is, to where they were quit straight.
Maybe I was just lucky.

I recent straightened two bent blades on a Swiss Buck by peening the concave side of the bend with the ball of a light hammer. They did show the peen marks, but came out pretty darn straight. In the past I have broken a couple of blades by trying to flatten from the convex side.

I have straightened several bent tips to a useable utility level, but they were not cosmetically perfect. They would look perfectly straight, but occasionally when the light would hit the side of the blade you could see just a slight wave that marked where the bend was.

I tried not to look at them in that light.

Generally if it's soft enough to bend it SHOULD be soft enough to bend back however there is a chance of it breaking due to stresses in the steel. Safest bet is to heat it up , straighten while hot then re heat treat the blade.

As everyone said be careful!! I lightly tapped on a XX muskrat
And broke the tip off!

MM's method is the best, however I have straightened a few blades with slight bends by tapping them lightly with a small hard plastic hammer. But you always run the risk of a broken blade.
