All About Pocket Knives

I got this knife at the antique store last weekend. I saw it did say "made in USA" on the tang. I started to leave it but I figured since it was a USA knife I would get it. It has very good walk and talk but the name just bugs me.
Y'all ever heard of such?

Mike back in the day they were a Belnap brand, the expert's will be along to tell you all about them, there is quite a bit of info here in aapk. There seems to be a China connection too.

I bought mine in the late 80s from Smokey Mt.
I bought mine because as a carpenter I liked the name.

Low end construction but doable as a packer.

I clicked on Millerbros link about the Pineknot stamp and saw the Elephant Toe owned by Tony Bose.Lots of different opinions on it ,fake or real. I have the same elephant toe ,also a Pine knot.Hard to see the full stamp on the master blade ,the small blade you can see part of the JNO. W. Price stamp.Same double nail pull with match strike,worm groove jigging and iron bolsters.Very similar knife.I bought it at an antique shop about 25 years ago.I asked the owner if he had any knives,he pulled out a cloth bag and just dumped 7 knives on to a table.A pearl Robeson,4 blade Boker congress and four other good quality knives and the Pineknot elephant toe.I asked what he wanted for all of them,he said he was firm at $45 dollars.It takes patience to remove ones wallet without removing the entire pocket.

I think the OP knife with the yellow handles was made toward the end of Belknap Hardware’s existence just before they were bought out by Ace, I believe. I saw a late Belknap display case years ago with Delrin handled knives and that yellow handled stockman in it.

Do not know who made them, but at the time, I thought Camillus.

I believe that the OP knife was made by Colonial and possibly a special order for SMKW. There were a lot of those made, circa 1980's to 90's, same tooling as Colonial Ranger series knives but with the Pine Knot stamp. Several different handle colors. Also see the knife that Joe (FRJ) posted - same knife but in black.

Not sure who owned the Pine Knot trademark then, but it was long after Belknap closed and Bluegrass Cutlery owned the Bluegrass and John Primble trademarks.

Yep, that makes a lot of sense.... Probably a SMKW knife. Having a name like "Pine Knot" is something they would do.

I picked this one up a couple weekends ago. The tang stamp caught my attention.

It was a trademark used by Belknap Hardware from 1930-1940. Goins doesn't have much more info on the brand other than to say it was a second line to their John Primble India Steel Works line of knives.

I think someone did a repair to the barehead scale tips on this one. The material to the left of the back scale pins on both sides seems to be translucent. But not a bad find for $4 in my opinion.

And it's the real thing, John. There are two tells for a Pine Knot. One is the bird and the other is the line under the bird. On the real ones, the "O" is connected to the "W" like on yours.

I just love that tang stamp logo.....

Recently, this pocket knife arrived in a group or lot of pocket knives that I bought. It now becomes my first example to be posted under this topic or thread (FOR REFERENCE). I did NOT buy the group or lot of pocket knives to obtain this particular pocket knife. I am NOT adding this pocket knife to my general, pocket knife accumulation. Instead, it is going in my "broken" knife box. It is a PINE KNOT, two blades (the main blade is broken), one tang stamp, 3 1/2" closed, two springs, long main blade pull (if it wasn't broken), pocket knife. The main broken blade, front tang stamp, is the curved or arched style and says, "PINE KNOT (over) (bird image) (over) Jno W Price (written)" It appears that this pocket knife once had a shield. It does NOT have a shield now. The main blade stub has a soft half stop, but a VERY GOOD opening and closing snap. The secondary blade also has a soft half stop, along with an ok opening and closing snap. Even with the broken main blade, this pocket knife is still in FAIR condition. I had to clean it a little. I took some pictures and here it is.
