All About Pocket Knives

Well MM. I see you got your chance to work with Mammoth tooth. Nice job, great looking shape, that piece of tooth looks just like the one I put on a Buck 110. Good job of matching the the edges to the bolsters.

My son did one, a Buck 110 also and he did not match to the bolsters as well, but there is a little trick often used with wood that works with mammoth tooth, should you need it in the future, which I doubt. Unless a piece crumbles when cutting. I had no problem cutting tooth with a metal cutting bandsaw using a Bi-Metal blade.

I had my son break up the mammoth tooth and then seperate the colors. Yeah, PIA, but it works. Once the colors are seperated grind them to a fine powder (my son used a sheet of heat treating foil folded over and over) Once powdered mix it with 2 hour Devcon. Be sure to mix the colors seperately and apply them where needed to match the tooth scale. 5 minute Devcon can be used if you are experienced, which my son wasn't, it was his first knife. That's why he used 2 Hr.

Anyhow, when all was said and done, you could not see the voids that were there and I had trouble seeing them also. Using Devcon has worked better from my observations than super glue with tooth.

Holy smokes! This isn't fair! I get some little, relatively inexpensive knife that pitches my tent....then, I've got to endure looking at these museum works!

Please....don't misunderstand me. I'm absolutely overwhelmed with the gorgeous workmanship and the material involved and the original knife platform from which to launch this project. It's just that it really puts things into perspective for a new-comer to the pocket knife world. There's pocket knives....then there's pocket knives.

Since learning of this site, I've seen more beautiful knives and craftsmanship than I ever imagined exhisted. I feel very humbled....and rightfully so.

YUP PERS now that's a piece of ART and History....

check this out ,some times what you see is not what you get,
in my case ,the knife on the tin is not what i got,how about 10-thousand year old mastadon ivory,with damascus steel layered over 500 times,

Nice score countrydanny, those have some pretty nice steel. Now I'm thinking of putting some ivory on one of those 2006 GEC knives. I know there are still some 2006 knives out there, I believe there are still some Northfield Walnut herringbome as well as a bunch of 2006 GEC tobacco knives also. I have some premium bark ivory scales, maybe they will fit on the smaller GEC. IF not, well I do know I can come up with something.
