All About Pocket Knives

Hello I'm a new member here. Just started whittling late last year. This is a eagle I just carved out of a block of basswood. It was my second try. Hope to see more of everyone's carvings.

Doug it that is your 2nd try I can't wait to see the 3rd one. Welcome we have some real carvers here and a few old whittlers as well. As stated above show us your knife. And Welcome.

Thanks for the compliments. I actually used a couple Flexcut carving knives for this one and a the V-tool on a Old Timer whittling jack for the feather's.

Here is a mushroom I carved with a Rough Rider whittler pattern.

Flexcut is hard to beat. Good job with the little RR as well.

[image][/image]This was a second attempt at small creature carving, with a schatt and Morgan carpenters whittler..the first whittler I bought-I could have used a longer piece of wood/tail seems too short; did a little hand sanding on her, now she just needs her legs and feet...

to AAPK, Mareseatoats! To be perfectly honest, I did a double take on your user name, glancing at it some how I got the idea it read, "mares eating sea oats". Then I remembered the nursery rhyme.
Wood carving is an interesting pursuit, keep the carvings coming.

Wow, brings back memories! My mother used to sing that song to me.

“Mairzy Doats” is a novelty song written and composed, in 1943, by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston. It was first played on radio station WOR, New York, by Al Trace and his Silly Symphonists. The song made the pop charts several times, with a version by the Merry Macs reaching No. 1 in March 1944. The song was also a number one sheet music seller, with sales of over 450,000 within the first three weeks of release.[1]

The song's refrain, as written on the sheet music, seems meaningless:

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?[2]
However, the lyrics of the bridge provide a clue:

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy."[2]
This hint allows the ear to translate the final line as "a kid'll eat ivy, too; wouldn't you?"

Marizy Doats was the first song I learned to sing and would sing it repeatedly thru the day. The next song I learned was I'm looking over a three leaf clover.... Not sure of the title.

Ha I am glad to see my user name struck up some conversation-yes, my grandmother would sing that to us, thinking back when her mother used to sing it to her. My wonderful Grandmother is still living, 94 years old, and sometimes I stay with her while working on my art. So that’s how the name stuck...and thanks all for the replies and positive comments on the carving. It’s balsa Wood, a little too soft and dentable, but hope to move on to nicer woods in the future. Have a good weekend folks!!

Ps, did the new GEC AAPK knife already sell out here? Great looking blade with the handle color...
