I found this in an old post here on AAPK. I don't own the book but AAPK member 'remington collector' says in a post made December 17, 2005, "Theres a good story about Mr. Hawbaker and his knives in Jim Sargents 6th edition." ---► viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4583&p=36149&hilit= ... ker#p36149

That's not definitive but it's a start.

A few years ago a 1938 mint etched Schrade CutCo Hawbaker muskrat came up on ebay as an auction for some low price that I knew would grow bigtime. I emailed the seller and asked him to set a BIN price and I would pay it. He said "Sure..." The next thing I knew he had re-done the listing instead of sending me an invoice. Someone grabbed it for somewhere between $20 and $80 (I can't remember now) in two seconds flat, before I could even get back onto the page. I would have paid $300. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( This also brings up another thought. There are dozens of multi-millionaire collectors out there who never contribute to any of the forums and never share any information with any of us. That knife is just gone into some rich boy's hole and we will never get to see a picture of it.

The article Cal posted says the first Case Hawbaker was 1960. So wherever or whatever else you've seen saying otherwise is likely wrong. Earlier versions were not by Case.
