All About Pocket Knives

Just wanted to show one of my knives and see if I can find out more about it or the company. It was made by Continental Cutlery Co in N.Y. around 1920. And that's where my story ends . Help me know more please. And enjoy!

Goin's book says 1915-1920 and dates CONTINENTAL CUTLERY CO. KANSAS CITY MO. with the same dates. Both stamps are attributed to Clark Brothers that bought Northfield Knife Co. in 1919.

I've seen quite a few wood handle big coke bottle folding hunters with the Continental N.Y. stamp. Not many smaller jewels like this little pearl. Not a common stamp and not a common knife for the stamp.

If I’m not mistaken, Goins lists Continental in Sheffield, New York and Kansas City.

I have no idea what the connection might be between the three, but every CONTINENTAL CUTLERY CO. / NEW YORK marked knife I have ever seen was made by The Robeson Cutlery Co. based on patterns, bone and Robeson letterhead documentation.

My girlfriend and I were attending a wedding in Salisbury, MD last Friday and we stayed in Princess Anne at the Washington Inn & Tavern. They had a few local antique shops so I decided to check them out for antique knives, with no success, but one store owner told me about the Rusty Rooster Antique Mall. http://www.rustyroosterantiquemall.com/ It was several miles down the road in Westover, MD and he said if anyone had pocket knives this guy would.

Well, he had just bought around 800 pocket knives from an estate where the son and daughter weren't interested in pocket knives and just wanted to unload them. Most look like they had been drowning victims or used to within a centimeter of their lives but I looked at the roughly 400 knives the store owner had available for purchase. He had a bunch grouped 5 to a Ziplock bag for $17 so I started going through them first, ending up buying 2 sets of 5 knives which I will share later.

He also had 2 double level knife cases with better knives priced individually and I settled on this Continental Cutlery Co. NY hunter. Looks to be Ebony and the pile scale is cracked but not loose, pretty full blade too with long match-striker pull. Could be as young as 99 years old as stated above, according to Goins. I think it was worth the $25 he was asking and hope to revisit sometime to see what else he might have.

I have seen several ebony handled Continental coke bottle folding hunters, but not sure I've ever seen an ebony handled Robeson, but I'm sure they must have made them.

That's a very nice old knife.
