Sheath Knife Navy/Marine Aviator Schrade-Walden

I just started knife collecting and should have taken the advice of Bill Horn who warns on his web site about the addictive nature of same.
I was a jet fighter pilot in the US Marines from 1955-60. I was issued a sheath knife which I carried on my life vest during that time. It is 9 5/16" overall length. The blade is 5 3/16" X 1 1/16" Printed on the blade just below the guard is "SCHRADE-WALDEN N.Y. U.S.A." I'm not interested in selling but would like to know if anyone knows the approximate value.

Hi Big Don Don:
You have what I believe is a second generation Pilots survival knife. This was from a July 1954 amendment spec. that smoothed the junction between the plastic spacer and the pommell so as not to tear clothing.
It was the same designation as the first gen.MIL-(k)-8662(AER) but was tagged with a suffix of -1. Another change was the false edge was sharpened. The only other change I see is the sheath had an additional rivet installed for a total of six. It might if in mint condition sell for a couple hundred bucks. It is in my opinion worth far more to your future generations with the adventures that go with it as a display in a nice show case. It would enhance the entire thing if you would put pictures of yourself in flight suit wearing knife and any stories you might care to put on paper IE: crash landings, flameouts, carrier cat shots and landings etc. Insert them in case with knife. By the way, nice looking knife and sheath.

Thanks, Moss for the nice post. Good ideas! Unfortunately I have no photos of myself from that era. In those days we weren't interested in such. I do have some squadron photos of me in a group. I just remembered I do have a Cruise Book of a deployment to Japan and Taiwan. (We called it Formosa then) Maybe a photo there in flight gear.

Which carrier. Put the cruise book with the knife. In all likelyhood the book is worth more than the knife. Cruise books especially the older ones are becoming quite collectible. Should you get time why dont you go to forum called off topic discussion and post pics of your cruise book showing if you could the list of squadrons aboard the ship.

As far as dollar value goes, $25-$30, but usually less. A military collector would probably pay more it he needed that pattern to complete a series of knives, as Moss has mentioned.
