All About Pocket Knives

I was working on this one for a friend. He spent some time in Hawaii many years ago, and had got some MonkeyPod from a tree that was being cut down. He had it all these years, and at some point had it made into bookends. We had talked a few years back about doing a knife with the wood, and this year he wanted to do one for his son. I chose a pre-2004 34OT, as it's a nice smallish stockman that works for most tasks. He gave me the bookends, and I cut some down to use as covers. I threw in a different shield.

Here's the finished product...


I did not use any CA or other wood finishes. It does a decent job finishing with standard buffing compounds.

That's amazing. I have a new-found respect for the monkeypod trees in my yard. To be sure, they're nice big shade trees but very messy (constantly dropping leaves & seedpods). Had no idea they have "hearts of gold" such as your work revealed. Beautiful. Pure magic.

Fantastic looking knife Glenn. I would expect no less from you. You are definitely one of the "Elite". Glenn, I'm not sure if I'm seeing this right so I'm going to provide a few photos for comparison.

On one of your photos, there appears to be "ridges and valleys" in the wood. Probably just looks that way. Compare the first photo of the OP knife, and then the second photo of a Case Stag 32 I own. The portion I circled on each photo looks nearly the same. Just an illusion?

That wood has a weird name but it sure is beautiful. Click on the photos to get a better look. It's hard to see unless you increase the size of the pictures.

Thanks for the comments, Mike. I guess the pictures are misleading. The wood finished for the most part "smooth". It did have some deep grain, if you look below the shield, there is some grain there, that could be filled, but I left it open for character

That 34 OT is nothin' but nice! Have not seen monkeypod wood on a knife before, looks great!

Never heard of monkeypod but it sure makes some fine handles. As usual Glenn, you have done super work.

I have seen monkey pods for sale at the warehouse where I buy most of my exotic hardwoods but I never knew they look that good when you cut them up for wood.

I may have misread that Dale but I believe he used the wood from the tree, not from the pod (fruit?). Just did a Google search and Monkey Pod wood is EXPENSIVE!!!!!

Don't know why I am unable to edit my posts or even quote posts but the above works out to a skosh over $60 per bd/ft.

Jerry, you are not the only one having trouble editing posts, I am having an issue with it also. I didn’t realize other people were having the same problem I thought my issue was tied to my status as an administrator. I will advise Bryan you’re having difficulty with editing posts also.

Hate to complicate your life but lately I've been unable to use the buttons on a post (except for the first post on a page) to quote, edit my posts, report a post or quote a post. Seems to work fine for the first post on each page but not subsequent posts. It doesn't seem to be forum or thread sensitive.

Even as an administrator I was having the same problems. Normally I can pretty much access anything but I couldn't even access my own post yesterday. Bryan got it fixed and I think we're all good now.
Is anyone still having that problem?
