All About Pocket Knives

When I saw the GEC Beer Scout knife I thought that is a cool knife. I am going to make my own version. So here is my journey with some pictures and some explanations here and there. First I started with 3 small Klein rope knives . One good knife and two parts knives. I proceeded to tear them all down and get my parts ready. Seeing as these are single blade knives I had to take one of the liners remove the bolster and cut it down to make a center dividing liner. Ok decided on stag handles (who doesn’t love stag). After I got everything ready I put it together and I was a happy camper for a minute. When I would close the main blade it would hit the liner. I had to krink/crink the blade. Anyone who has did this knows it is nerve racking. Lol. Anywho sure enough I broke my one good blade. Lucky for me I throw nothing away and I had just took two 4 line Camillus USA camp/Scout knives apart and made one good solid knife ( I have pictures of that journey also) I had the main blade from the parts knife that was missing the tip. So I modified that blade,gave it a half stop, and threw it into my FrankenBeerKnife creation. I hope you guys enjoy the pics. Comments,questions, and observations welcome and expected. Thanks, Ed.

That turned out very nice. Now I have one question please. How do you give a knife a half-stop? I'd like to know how that's done because I personally love half-stops.

Thank you very much my friends. Mike I also love half stops. Basically what your doing is flattening the end of the tang to make half stops. Well there is a little more to it but that is the meat of it so to speak. If you will take two of your knives one with half stops and one without and look down the end where you can see the tang the difference is the one with no half stops is perfectly round and the one with half stops is flat. The flat area of the tang gives the blade the half stop. I hope I explained that ok. Lol. I am smiling my friends.

You're having too much fun Ed! I think it is GREAT that you are making knives for yourself as well as rebuilding them in general.

As always I have a question.
Wouldn't krinking be easier if you partially annealed the tang at the recasso area? A mock up should let you know if a krink is needed, and keeping the blade in water while annealing the tang should work, shouldn't it?

Ken my friend, I don’t know if that would work or not. I do mock things up first but when you peen everything together sometimes you have to “tweak” a few things because when you tighten things up occasionally things shift even if it’s ever so slightly and you have to give it a “nudge”. Lol thanks for the support Ken I appreciate it.

That's when the idea of partially annealing came to mind, and I've been wondering about it since...

Nice job Ed, keep up the good work! I did a beer scout for another member not too long ago made from a TL-29. We kept the screwdriver long and cut a cap lifter in the base of the screwdriver blade. I love the fact that you used two rope knives for parts and mated the cap lifter screwdriver from your other project. Which turned out very nice by the way!

I have a Buck Creek three blade stockman that gassed out but I saved the blades that I am going to make some FrankenKnife with mmmmm in fact I have a old camillus cigar pattern that the blades are wore down to nubs I may use it to create my next mad scientist creation.
