All About Pocket Knives

You will notice several straight darker lines appearing throughout the handle and running horizontally. I am hoping the line running off the center pin is a natural part of the wood's texture. I would value any assessments.

Garry I'd say it's a natural marking not a pin crack. Of course it would be a much easier call with knife in hand. The horizontal line that is adjacent to the pin (and sorta looks like a crack) is segmented to the right of the pin . A crack would, I think, be an unbroken line.

Roger that Phil. I bought it new years ago [Camillus/Jim Fisk Bowie] and I didn't doubt it was just natural, not a de3fect. But now, with too much time on my hands I began to question it. I do believe you are right. Thanks.

I too doubt that it is a pin crack, when I put pins in a handle , I always drill the hole a few thousands oversize and use epoxy to fill in any voids, which are very little. I included a photo of one I'm just finishing up, the pin holes were drilled in burl wood and didn't split. It could be a sanding mark that didn't get sanded out? Terry

Mechanically, I do not belove it is a "crack".
There are grain lines that prove the material has a natural flow.

Forget the fact that anyone wants to believe.whatever their buyer point of view is.
I have several knives that were passed up on because of what the image(s) portrayed as flaws. Once I had them in hand...

Thanks QS, BTW what kind of wood is that? dyed curly maple? It sure has some nice looking fiddle back. I'm not sure what kind of wood that burl is, I got it in a giant box of odds and ends from a bowl turner friend in Co. It did have some maple burl in the box so maybe that's what it is. If you run a finger nail across the mark/crack , can you feel anything? Still don't think it is a crack. Nice knife! Terry

The wood is maple. There is no "feel" to the line under discussion; in other words a finger nail does not detect it.
