All About Pocket Knives

I have another beautiful knife that I am having trouble in identifying. The markings on the blade look like 96 or RR. Has anyone seen this stamp before? Any help would be greatly appreciated

The first custom fixed blade i bought (and still have) was from Ray. Amazing guy, scientist, expert in steel & other metal, fatigue, for NASA, as well as a forger of knives.

Yes, for sure the OP knife is one of Ray Rantenan's. In addition to the same "RR" marking, the style of the knife is typical of Ray's work as can be seen by the similarity to my knife from Ray.
So far it looks like the guy who posted has not checked back ?

Thanks so much to cajancolletor and Kootenay Joe!! It looks like tang stamp matches Ray Rantanen. I wasn't sure about the sheath but I am certain this goes with this knife. I had no idea of the value but my brother-in-law kept this knife in with his Randalls and Ralph Bone knives. I'm not certain when he purchased it but at least I have a good idea of it's value. I really appreciate the information. I tried everything to find out who made this knife.

You can email Ray with picture of your knife and he might be able to tell you the year it was made if this is of interest to you. Price would likely have been a bit less than a Randall but not by much.

Hello Kootenay Joe,
I did email Mr. Rantanen and he wrote back. Apparently he has an invoice for my brother-in-law in 2004. I'm not sure the knife was made that year or earlier but it looks like you were very close to the value of the knife. Thanks again for the I.D.

Thanks for posting this follow up. Really neat that Ray can find the invoice for your knife from 13 years ago and that he takes the time to do so and the care to let you know. Buying a custom knife can bring a friendship with the knife maker which makes the knife a little more 'special'.

What an interesting thread this turned out to be. For a moment or two I had the hubris to think I had figured it out. At the first glance I thought, Gee that bone looks like the kind Rough Rider uses. Then I doped out the "brand" with the two Rs. Yep, no doubt about it. What we have here is an exotic Rough Rider. Just as I was about to formalize my ignorance with a post, all you Long Riders thundered past leaving me eating your dust back with the pack animals. But gentlemen, it is an honor to be choked by your dust.

There are literally thousands of knife makers at work making knives right now. The only reason i could ID the OP knife, is because i have a knife from the same maker and his style of knife along with the stylized RR are unique to him. No genius on my part. Likely the next 99 customs that get posted i won't have a clue about.

That is exactly why this, and almost all forums have real world value.
There is always Someone there that knows the answer.

I've learned far more on countless forums than I ever have in private research. When my friends poke fun about me wearing out a couple keyboards a year... I just giggle.
