All About Pocket Knives

I joined AAPK last Weds. Oct 11. I retired a few years back and have been doing some knife repair and customizing since them. I have somewhat of a knife collection, you wont see a lot of old Case or other rare, valuable knives in my collection. I am particularly interested in the old "glory days" of American knife makers when there was literally hundreds of companies making both quality and serviceable knives. I recently bought a Paxton & Gallagher harness knife at the flea market, and to have something like that in your hand and think of all the people who may have owned and used it blows me away. I also have a Wilbert Moose bone handle, a Bridge Cutlery stockman, a Brantford, a Keen Kutter, get the idea? I like the variety of manufacturers and different patterns. Back in the late 1970S and early 1980s I was selling at a lot of gunshows. I did some leather work and holster making, and to make another buck and cover my tables I sold knives. My main brands I sold were Parker Brothers, which were very popular then, a brand called Old Cutler which were made by Colonial (and from whence I have take my login name), and I also had a few new Case, Western, and Camillus. Of all those knives I still have only a couple of the Old Cutler brand knives, but they are brand new, I have never used them. A while back when I was cleaning out the closet or something I found an old 1980 invoice from Matthews Cutlery in Atlanta where I bought a DOZEN new assorted Old Cutler knives for $35.00. WOW!!! I think I sold them for $9.00ea, at the gunshows. The Parker boot knives were also a big seller as well as Lansky sharpeners which had just come out about that time. Still have my Lansky from then although all the original stones have worn out and been replaced with diamond stones. Progress is good too. I am working to find out who made knives that are blade etched "The Winchester Store" as I have one of these also. Anyway enough rambling and I will contribute what I can to your group.

I have a similar "eclectic" collection of odd ball knives. Nothing earth shaking but every one of them has a story.

It sounds to me like you found yourself the right forum! These fellas know soooo many things about sooo many brands that it constantly amazes me.
Post up, an oddity, and someone has three of them. Next poster is the guy that built them, next guy... you get it

Old cutler welcome to AAPK!! We seem to have similar interests in collecting. I also enjoy the older brands and the more the merrier. I have some Old Cutler brand knives also. Can you post pictures of what you have? We love pictures here on AAPK.

Thanks for all your replies to my introduction. I wanted to join a while back, right after I retired, but have only recently gotten my setup done to take pictures to upload. I am in the process of copying boxes of old family photos with the digital SLR and made a copy stand that I attached to a small workbench that I have in the house. Works good for knife photography too. I too like to see all the great pictures of the old knives on AAPK. Hope my pics are up to standards. Two Old Cutlers I still have below. #723 Barlow and #533 Stockman. Both are brand new, the Barlow is still in original box. I always thought they were a well made knife and like I said, I sold them for $9.00 back in the day.
