Hey Guys, We have a Rogers bone thread but not a Winterbottom thread. Please post pictures of your Winterbottom knives
Is "Winterbottom" made from Cow Bone or deer horn Stag??? I will post my Queen City to get this thread rolling

Is winterbottom long grooves instead of small jigs? Where did the name come from?

I only have one. The front handle is cracked but the back one is good. Now that I think of it, I don't even know how old this knife is...

I have only one as well, this #69 S&M Barlow. Not an old one but she's a beauty in my eyes.

Mike, the tang stamp on your Queen dates it to circa 1958 – 1960.

I believe your Queen falls in the "about 1958-1960" according to the Tang Stamp page here on the forum.
I'm not sure about the pattern number, it looks like #9 in the picture, a 4" Stockman.
sunknife, that's a fine lookin' Barlow with Winterbottom handles.
Looks like Mark, "ratlesnake75", has started an interesting thread!

Hey Guys, I read this article that was in Knife World (http://www.knife-expert.com/bonehand.txt) and I dont quite understand if "Winterbottom" handles from the 20's or earlier are Genuine Deer Horn or Cow Bone???
What you guys think? This article calls it BOTH in my opinion..
I am thinking that some NOT ALL,,, Winterbottom actually come from Deer Horn Stag which I find to be very cool indeed

The Fisherman all Be It Damaged Was A lot of Bottom For The buck You Mite Say , Still Looking for a Match ...

Just a thought, if what we visualize as deer horn (antler) stag, it usually has plenty of natural striations, why would there be a need to add Winterbottom grooves? I don't know squat about what they did back then, but common sense asks why mess up a natural grooved, gnarly grip by adding grooves?
I've got a couple real Winterbottom handled Queens that I'll post a little later on.

Hey Treefarmer, I do agree with you. That is why I am confused about that LINK that was in knife World by Mr. Levine. Just speculating here,,,Not unusual for them companies to Jig there own patterns in the BONE or Stag,,,many were 2nd cut especially by Case

"Winterbottom Cutlery Works, Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, 1925.

"The first [bone] stag of the [Winterbottom] type came to life
during this period. It was all done by hand, and I had many blisters
to prove it. Fred decided we had to have a machine to do this job.
As you know, every piece of real deer-horn stag is different. To make
a machine that would make different patterns was quite a chore"

Here's my pile of Queen Winterbottom knives, the ones on the right are all imitation Winterbottom. The ones on the left are real Winterbottom bone with the exception of the one at the bottom, it is real Stag. The stag handle should support the idea we mentioned earlier, why cut grooves in a naturally grooved piece of antler?
At the bottom of each column is a pattern #52, there is a difference in the cow bone, the antler stag and the delrin.
The two below the fixed blades in the left column are the same era pattern #49s, 1958-1960, one well used the other a "safe queen".(those two are my avatar picture)

Here's a recent acquisition with Winterbottom bone. I have a few Queens with synthetic Winterbottom but this Clauss, which I believe was made by Queen, is bone.

My favorite handle material, here are a couple of Case Winterbottom Sunfish knives, a Case Bros Brown Winterbottom and a W R Case & Sons in Red Winterbottom.

Hey Tom, I thought the top Case bros looks like Rogers bone to me,,,I certainly agree that is smashing Red Winterbottom on the bottom knife,,very rare to see that. Smashing knives
