John Primble, need a little help, please........
Recently, I picked up these two identical John Primble knives, All stainless construction, handles marked "Stainless Handle". closed length is 3 1/2". Blade length is 1 7/8". The bottom side of the hook blade is sharp, the rest is not. What was this knife designed for? What was it called? Any help will be much appreciated!
We are all smarter than any one of us. Let us learn from each other.

I do not know what it is called but it (your knife) is used to cape an animal. The "hook" blade is used around the eyes, the nose, and mouth.
Judging by the size, I'd say it is a small game knife. Beaver, coon, ect...
Pretty gross... I'm not a hunter, and I buy my meat.
My brother is the skinner in the family.

It is called a rooster nutter, by most people (maybe not the official pattern name?), and the small hook blade was used for neutering roosters.

I always thought the hook was a timber scribe to mark grades on logs and lumber
The other answers do make sense though

I was wondering why my Bro-s would use a "nut knife" for caping but one of them (brothers) uses flashlights for tail lights in his car.
I have seen this knife advertised as a "nut knife". Most likely is.
I cant imagine castrating a rooster tho...

Those capons (castrated roosters) will get right big, good for eating. And the rooster fries are right tasty too, especially fries up and served with gravy and biscuits for breakfast!americanedgetech wrote:I was wondering why my Bro-s would use a "nut knife" for caping but one of them (brothers) uses flashlights for tail lights in his car.

A timber scribe is bigger and a different shape from the nutter blade.Culery wrote:I always thought the hook was a timber scribe to mark grades on logs and lumber

Hmmmm.
The only experience I have w/ Roosters is... They are the best watch dogs you can have that run wild.
I knew a rooster named Ralph that was a butt kickin' monster. At sunset he became a pussy cat. I think mom, and my bro's ate him. I miss Ralph!
I like the capping knife idea better because I loved Ralph. Can't imagine "nuttin" a rooster
(although I am most likely mistaken about the blade)
