All About Pocket Knives

Does anyone collect good for knives. This one is good for 50 cents on the purchase of a suit or overcoat. I wonder how many are out there. If you had one that was good for a drink in a saloon you would have something worth serious money.

Did not know such knives existed. Sure would be a hoot if that program was still
in existence would it not?

That would be a very interesting collecting focus. Love the knife and the concept behind it.

That's got to be REAL old. When 50 cents was a decent amount of money. Maybe the 1880s or so?

Wayne had one of these type knives he sold on eBay a few months back. Maybe if he sees this thread he will educate us a little more.

Although I don't have one of those knives,I have seen them before. One if I remember correctly was for a shoe store in St. Louis.
Here are a couple of similar pieces that you could use for redemption. One is for an Old Coon cigar and the other is good for 50 cents when you open any $5 savings account at that bank. Don't know the exact era but likely sometime in the 1930's or slightly earlier.

I recently sold 3 of these "Simply Show" knives. They are quite uncommon and seem to have a small but strong following as collectibles.

The three I had were all Premier or Elk stamped with salesmans' sample ink on the pile side of the master blades. The stamp dates to 1921-1955 according to Goins' book. I feel that the knives date to the earlier park of that time frame. Recently similar examples have sold at well over $100 on eBay.

The last picture is of the Karl Lehto store in Sudbury, Ontario.

For those who may not be aware, Elk was a brand name owned by Premier Cutlery.

Interesting thread. Wayne posted a picture of a knife advertising a men's and boy's wear shop in Saskatoon. I happen to live in Saskatoon. I tried searching and the best I could find was this ad, for a photography studio, that mentions The Gillespie Big 22 Ltd Men's and Boys Wear Shop. It is from a 1929 newspaper ad. This was the best I could find and am really starting to hate the internet. Probably just sour grapes as my search skills are lacking.

Did a bit more searching. Gillespie Big 22 Ltd was in operation as early as 1908 and existed until 1959. Below is a photo of the store from a 1939 archive.

Found one of these at the Central KY knife show in a junk box. One blade is broken but the tang is marked Antelope on the front and Albert Lyman & Co / Germany on the back. Still a good find! Small Colorado town.

I am definitely going to keep an eye out for one of these. Very cool. I’ve never seen one either.
