All About Pocket Knives

No way I could come up with a favorite. There are so many amazing makers.

I'm fairly new to custom knives and it seems like every time I turn around I see an amazing piece by someone I've never heard of. It is overwhelming. Maybe in like 10 years I'll be able to narrow down to a few makers that I prefer.

I've been checking out the works of J.A. Harkins lately. I really like the Trident Out The Front autos that he makes. I can't afford this one, but MOD manufactures a colaborated design that I can barely afford. I ordered one today

I lean toward Tom Anderson, Shane Sloan, and Victor Lee. I only wish there designs were made in USA not China. I have found a knife maker locally in Union,SC, named David McFalls( http://www.mcfallsknives.com ). Fantastic work! Must be seen in person to be REALLY appreciated.

Great looking knives, I'll take one of each....My current favorite is Arno Bernard who in my opinion sells for an unbelievable price compared to other custom makers. But he also sells out of South Africa and the currency rate I was told is 1/6 of ours which is probably why he is affordable..


This knife has a blade length of 3 15/16" and the overall length is 6 5/8". The scales are Wart Hog tusk. Each knife comes with a beautiful handmade sheath, most are Cape Buffalo, but also Alligator, Crocodile, or Ostrich $100.00

I would like to add a couple of my favorite custom knife makers. One is Gary Tucker out of Kentucky, and another is Mike Malosh out of Gladwin, Michigan. They are both very talented artisans.

Mike Malosh if I'm not mistaken was a sheath maker for Jim Behring from Michigan and learned from Jim which I think makes one of the best Scagel Style Knives out there . I will post some of Jim's later Thanks for sharing

My favorite custom knife makers? ALL of them!Unfortunately my very thin wallet does not permit me to indulge in very many,"excesses of the forge". Over the years I have managed to accumulate some of what(who?)I consider to be great knife makers.Some of them are:
James B.Lile. I was fortunate to acquire one of his drop point hunters with ambidextrous sheath from a lawyer friend of mine.
Jason Williams. Bought the 14th knife he ever made when he was just 19 years old.the workmanship is non pariel.
Tom McLuin. I have four of Tom's knives including his first friction folder. He is also a great friend.
Jim & Doyle Nolen:I have one of their belt buckle knives made back in the 1970's.Sadly both have passed on but son Steve is carrying on the family tradition in Longmont Colorado.One day I hope to be able to afford one of his knives.
William Zalesky.My first custom knife was his drop point hunter.I also got a boot knife he made.He may not be alive anymore.
Gerorge Cousino of Onsted Michigan(about 10 miles from my home).A beautiful drop point hunter my son and daughter bought me for Christmas one year.
Jim Turecek of Derby CT. Waited over a year for Jim to finish his miniature fighter/bolo tie.Turned out it was the last one he ever made.Too labor intensive according to him.He still makes full sized knives.

I don't know how he might have started out, but Mike Malosh is a custom knife maker located within 30 minutes of me. For what its worth, Mike Malosh has used sheaths made by Mosher for some time. The one I have includes a Mosher sheath. At one time Mike Malosh used the name Chaser Made Knives (after his son, I believe). I believe DLT Trading has some of Mike's knives for sale right now.

And I agree with your assessment of Jim Behring.

To narrow it down a bit, these are my favorite traditional knife makers ...

In no particular order...

Bose boys, Tom Ploppert, Gene Shadley, Aaron Wilburn

Still looking forward to owning a Ryu Kawamura, Joel Chamblin and a few others

Another couple of names I will add: John Greco made some gorgeous fixed blades, but seems to be doing a lot more things in micarta and carbon fiber now. All nice though. Billy Smith made some nice Scagel style knives as well. Finally, I have a really nice knife made by Greg Trout, but I am not sure he is still active.

My mistake your right Malosh is a Knife Maker that uses Mosher Sheaths and had a lot of help from Jim & James Behring when he first started he gives them credit on his site .
Mosher also is a Knife Maker & well know for his sheaths . I have Jim Behring knives with Mosher Sheath & some Sheaths that Jim Made Thanks for setting the record straight that's why I love AAPK
