All About Pocket Knives

I saw this new 13" "Das Magische Messer" "Made in Germany . Solingen" knife on ebay for very little money. I took it to be a bread knife with an adjustable guide to enable even thickness slicing of bread. Just what i need as my daughter is a 'wedgie' slicer that then jams up in the toaster giving off black smoke and a wailing smoke alarm that i have to run around and open doors and windows and flap tea towels. I really do need an even thickness bread slicer.
However now that i have it, there is a problem. The adjustable guard projects a full 1" below the blade edge. So this super Mr. Magic adjustable thickness slicer knife is for slicing something you want to remain attached at the base.

That's the first time I have ever seen two grown men have that much fun slicing foods superthin while speaking German!
I think QVC would be much more fun here if they spoke German and had those two guys on QVC!
The plus side to QVC speaking German here is: my wife doesn't speak German!

It's a cool concept! I need to get one so I can learn German and sliced things superthin!

So, ya gotta slice the bread lengthwise ! Actually one just needs to raise the handle at the end of the slice enough so that distal end of blade is lower than thickness adjuster. How come i didn't think of that ? I have always been a horizontal bread slicer, i.e. holding knife horizontal, not while lying down.
At least i only paid a fraction of 25 Euros.
I feel a little stoopid, which is correct, i should be.

I bought one of these "As Seen on TV" jobber doies. It's far from the first tool I reach for.

I seen one at the Goodwill a couple of weeks ago in their knife bin for a buck. The lady that works there told me her Grandmother used one to slice cheese, meats like bologna when you could buy them by the poundage, that kinda thing when they had corner butchers shops. You could adjust the thickness on the side.
They still have butcher shops here and there, but mainly carry specialty cuts and they do have bulk cheeses. Now they have electric slicers and I would bet they would do a number on a finger.
The Boss gets Corned Beef there since you cannot legally raise it here in the USA. She makes a Killer Ruben! I would ask her to do it tonight since I have to mow, but she is one of the Faithful and it is Wednesday night.

I know about graters, peelers, slicing jigs, choppers, processors, and all manner of similar gizmos. By the time one scares one up out of the drawer or cabinet, figures out how to use it, uses it, and cleans it and puts it away, I have long since done the job quite nicely with my santuko or gyoto (or similar), wiped it clean and touched it to a hone or steel, admired it for the class act which it is, and slipped it into the block.

Calvin i agree as i'm sure most here do. With the correct knife for task at hand, and a sharp edge, you are set for any & all kitchen cutting. But sometimes it's o.k. to play with a gadget.

Jerry perhaps I can help at least on the 2nd item. "One of the Faithful" refers to her religious beliefs and practices. It's common for many churches to have a Wednesday evening service. I'm willing to wager Mrs.9Ball is attending church.

Now as for the corned beef, well that's got me scratchin' my head a bit.

Well I got that part Phil. I grew up in the home of a fire and brimstone, bible beatin', General Baptist preacher so I know about going to church on Wednesday night. And Sunday morning. And Sunday night. And a week of revival at least once a year and sometimes twice a year. And a week at church camp every summer. And once or twice a year, an all day singin' with dinner in the yard. The part I'm confused about is the conflict between going to church and making a corned beef sandwich.

Kind of reminds me of my days in the Nebraska state fair, there was always a demo guy trying to sell gimmicks for the kitchen! Kind of entertaining but if the women of the family bought one , it seemed to always end up in the back of the utensil drawer, never quite worked as good as the demo guy showed. And about 50 years down the road it was always the topic of the auctioneer at the estate sale, like "what the heck is this for". Terry ------ O, if you want corned beef, let me know, it's not illegal here in the corn country!

Maybe he has corned beef confused with automatic knives?
