All About Pocket Knives

I'm mainly a Case collector but I like all the oldies and pick up a few Remington's when I find them. I found this one today at an estate sale. It's 2 1/2" closed with what I suppose are pyremite scales. I've never seen the tang stamp which is on the main Pen blade. It looks like a logo which forms the letters SWR with Co superimposed with the R. I can't find any book or internet reference to this stamping. There is no pattern number. Any help is appreciated!

Neat old knife! If you had asked me to read the tang stamp, I would have said SWP Co. . I also see how you're reading it with an R. Just an observation.
Another observation, you've been an AAPK member for a while and only your 2nd post, anyhow as a poster and you also have an interestin' username!

Can't help with info but I have a similar knife with that stamp on the small blade. I have had a couple over the years.

Thanks for the welcome! I need to spend more time over here. Most of my time is spent on the Case Collectors Club Forum as that's my focus. However, this Forum/Site has a wealth of information and lots of great topics and threads. I'm looking forward to spending more time here.

And thanks for the different perspective...I was trying to read a capital R into the third character for Remington, but I guess it could be a P.

I read it as SWCo. Any chance it could be Schrade Walden? Did they ever make knives for Remington?

That's the same knife that I have. Schrade Walden? Could be, but I didn't know of any connection between the two. Thanks for sharing...

I believe that they made the pull ball knife for Remington and may have contracted to do others. Unclear on this. Here are the logos they have used and I don't see the logo in question. I do believe it is a contract knife but so far I have not located that company. Still looking...

So far this is as close as I have found to the tang stamp in discussion. This cutlery company produced cutlery and was located in New York.

E891 A rare American maker purchased after the publication of his book is this simply styled yet extremely well and professional made American Bowie by New York City makers circa 1850’s-1860’s. Very fine overall condition showing very little wear. 12 ¾ inches overall with 8 inch single edge blade with a pronounced clip point and a sharpened 4 inch false edge. Blade is exc. to almost mint. Brass hilt retains 95% of its original gilt finish and is exc. + with a deep fluted shell shaped wide pommel. Tapered black ebony or black walnut grips all exc. +. Minor narrow scratch on reverse side. Fine authentic three line markings stamped on the underside of the cross guard “GOULDING & FORD / FULTON STREET / NEW YORK.” Original very sturdily made thick black leather, form fitted sheath with the overlaid tip also in matching leather. Original scabbard and frog are cartouched “S.W. SILVER & CO, LONDON” Still affixed is the original leather belt frog (with which to attach to a waist belt). Known as sword makers as well as “Cutlers and Surgical Instrument Makers” the company was first known between 1850 and 1855 as “Wm. R. Goulding” and also known during those same years as “Goulding & Co.” as late as 1866. This is the only specimen so marked that I have yet encountered.... $5,200

This has the same tang stamp on the smaller blade as the one in discussion and the Remington 1935-1940 tang stamp on the master blade.

I thought I had one of these but was out of town. Interesting, all 3 examples have the yellow cracked ice handles. Mine is a 1933-35 Remington stamp. Same handle material, and all DuPont era knives. Glad you asked about this Buckibbq. I had wondered the same thing.

Keith what I find of interest is that the main blade on your knife and the knife I have shown has the Remington tang stamp, as it should. The knife in discussion has the unknown tang stamp on the main blade and the Remington logo on the small blade. That is unusual.

That is interesting. I didn't notice that. I need to pay closer attention to the details

Thanks for all your continued interest. I was trying to make a connection to the DuPont company and the questionable tang stamp but still no luck on my end. I'm glad to have a least found another example of this stamp. The investigation continues...

This may be a stretch, but, as I look at the tang stamp I really do see SWP Co. The "P" is joined to the "W". The "C" is overlaid on the "P", sort of making it look like an "R". I think the logo stands for Sherwin Williams Paint Co. Just my guess. I found the knife at an estate sale near Cleveland and the Sherwin Williams Paint Co. is headquartered and was founded here. Could this have been a promotional or giveaway knife?

I messaged Jim Pitblado about your knife and he confirmed that the stamp is definitely Sherwin Williams Paint Co .

Mike in my researched I read about the Sherwin & Williams logos but found nothing close to the tang stamp in discussion. Did Jim have a sample to share of the logo & it's history or a behind the scenes story? If anyone should know...it would be him!

Would a company spring for an advertising piece and only use such a subtle and easily overlooked logo? I would think they would want their name on the handle as well.

Rocky , Jim said he previously owned a mint example but couldn't remember the history on the knife .
