All About Pocket Knives

I was thinking of having Dad's EDC penknife restored and was wondering how much of the original knife must be preserved to be able to still call it "Dad's knife."

Do I say afterwards that " This was Dad's knife except the scales, pins, backsprings and liners."
Or do I say " I had this knife made and used the blades from Dad's knife."
Or maybe the liners are also original.
I really want to use the knife but I don't want to
lose the "knife". Get the idea?

I guess the question is how much can you have replaced & still feel like you are carrying your Dad's knife?

As long as you are comfortable with the fact that some things have been changed on the knife & that you still feel it is your Dad's knife, I don't think it matters what you have changed.

Another way to approach the question is: What needs to be replaced?
Are the handles good? Are the blades good? Are the backsprings good? Those three items will eventually wear out on any knife, even given the best of care.
Would you feel like your Dad's car was not "his" any more if you replaced the motor, tires & put a new engine in it and gave it a new paint job?

If it makes you feel closer to your Dad to fix up his old knife and carry it, then I would say, "Go for it."
If you would feel like it is not your Dad's knife, then keep it like it is and take it out once in a while to remember Dad.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

That's just like something Dad would have said.
He would lay all the cards on the table and leave the choice to me.
Somehow it always made the decision easier though, and I think you know what it is in this case.
