All About Pocket Knives

Here's another latest project. A plain-jane 92 with micarta covers. I suggested some nice jigged amber bone and a sword shield. The blades were also etched from water damage or forced patina, so I reground them a bit to clean them up. Here's the before and after.

I had a tough time letting this one go!

I would, however, like to ask one question: What exactly takes place to make the blade look like that? I had a knife with a blade that looked just like that and couldn't figure out what it was. I thought it was some type of glue residue. That must have been a chore to take that off, I couldn't do it with mine.

Anyways, very, very nice indeed.

That is actually water damage or some type of acidic liquid that has etched into the metal. Typically, people like to force a patina with mustard, apple juice, vinegar, etc. I think some liquids are stronger than others. Unfortunately, the only way to fix that would be to remove enough metal to smooth it out.

I have seen that type of etching of blades from knives that have set in water for an extended period, like in a toolbox or a tackle box.
Stronger acidic chemicals can also cause it, but plain old water can do it also.

Appreciate the info re the blade - I have had a couple of blades like that which I put in my junk pile thinking they were too far gone.
I had put it down to a deep flaw in the metal.
Fortunately very little gets thrown away around here ... I will have another serious look at them.

Glenn you know I'm a member of your fan club and work like this is why. You took an OK knife and made it into something beautiful. Not many can do that. Major kudos my friend.
