All About Pocket Knives

Hello and thanks for having me. I'm a long time knife-nut having picked up that "addiction" from my grandfather. I remember going to the "trading post"'(a local store's parking lot) on Saturday mornings with him and being in awe of the assortment laid out on pickup truck tailgates and in trunks.

I've never gotten into "high end" knives but drool over all of them - in and out of my price range. The past year or so I've gotten a desire to learn how to clean and restore old pocket knives, some for myself and others for my oldest (8 years) grandson; I have to un-sharpen his LOL. Anyway, some web searches led me here and I've read a fair amount and figured it was time to join and say "hi".

First, welcome aboard from the Commonwealth of Kentucky, glad to have you!

Second, dull knives are dangerous knives.

Thanks for the welcome gents. I should have clarified "un-sharpen": I grind off the edge flat and tip to round so there's no sharp or pointy areas on the blade anymore and then sand them with wet/dry paper to an almost mirror finish. And I test them in my own skin before he gets them. But I agree about dull tools being a hazard waiting to happen!

Very good! Sounds like some of the modern training knives!

Everybody has their own way of doing things.

I actually got the idea from a child's Opinel that I bought him 2 years ago. But it had too much of an edge on it for my (wife's LOL) liking and I filed and sanded it, too. Anyway, it got him started learning safe handling and sparked him to want more - a good thing in my book!

I hope you like it here as much as I do. It's a great place for all things knife. I've got a couple of grand daughters I've gotten started collecting knives. I love passing that torch.

While I was born in Maine, currently in New Jersey, WV blood does run in my veins. Dad was born in Weirton, West by-God Virginia, north of Wheeling.
