Awesome old Remington DuPont floor knife display

I recently purchased a Remington DuPont floor display. The gentleman I got the display from said it came from his dad's hardware store and he remembered the display when he was like 5 and he was born in 1942. The wood floor of the hardware store gave way later in life and my friend and his son went in and rescued some things. Well the display has some bottom rot but has good bones but I would love to hear comments on the age and how I should proceed to restore this awesome piece of knife history.

That is a sweet display you got. It's late 30's. I bought a big 6 ft long by 4 high by 4 deap display case made in 1919. It had the same issue. I cut 2 inches off the bottom all the way around and mount it onto a dolly type base. That way I can move it away from the wall to get into it.

Awesome display case . It's in the Dupont era so that dates it 34-39 .

I have no woodworking experience so I wouldn't know how to repair those sections, but man that's really nice. Please post photos when you get it all done. I hope someone here can assist you in getting that display up and running. That is absolutely something that needs to be restored. Very nice indeed... ::nod::

Thanks for all the comments everybody. The woodworking part I can handle. Probably going to have to replace the sides so I guess I am going to take the painted decals from the sides and make a topper out of one and a plate for the bottom out of the other. I am searching now to find someone who can replicate the decal. I would love to find someone to paint it on but if I have to I guess I will put vinyl on the sides. The way it is made right now you have to pull the glass up from the top to put knives on the display. I was thinking of changing that since I have to rebuild the sides. I was thinking of making the front glass a door with a lock so it would be easier to put knives on the display board. I would like the opinions of you gentlemen here so as to help me in my rebuilding efforts. The rot in the bottom has caused the plywood it's made of separate and I haven't come up with a way to splice a new piece on the sides to make it look right. That is why I am thinking I will have to replace them. Give me your ideas guys and thanks again for all the input. ::tu::

Everyone wants something different. For me I want them as close to original as possible. Mine have either the slide up glass or the back panel pulls out. It can be a pain to get to a knife sometimes but I like them the way they are. That's just me tho. Here are a couple pictures I had saved on my phone of some of my Remington cases. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Your case is a great one.

Thanks Rocky. It's interesting to me to think of the guys that used to drive to every little country town and go to the hardware store. Drag all there displays, pamphlets, and advertising stuff out of there car. Set up and give there speal. Those are the days.

Thanks Keith I value you opinion and expertise. I probably will keep the glass the way it is just running ideas through my head. What do you think of using the original side art as a topper? ::tu:: ::td::

I think that would look really good. They did that on the early displays.

If it was me I would try to leave as much of the original cabinet together. If you replace both sides of the plywood then the majority of the cabinet is gone. I see where the bottom is delaminated, maybe put a wide baseboard around the bottom to cover that part. Rebuild the back drawers clean the wood up and it would make a great display as is.

If you're looking for perfection then use this one as a template for measurements and create an entirely new cabinet, heck while you are at it make a few of them you'll probably need them down the road or there's probably a couple guys on this forum that would buy one

Best of luck whatever you decide to do ::tu::

If you ask around a little you can probably find someone capable of painting a duplicate of the decal for you. There are folks that can do it, you just have to find them. When I was restoring an old John Deere Model D tractor a few years ago, and needed someone to paint the emblems, I contacted the art teacher at the local high school. She recommended a 17 year old that was one of her students. Using what remained of the old painted symbol and a photograph, he did a great job and for a very reasonable price. Best of all he was thrilled to do it! ::tu::

I have an identical Remington/Dupont knife floor display, although mine is in exceptionally good shape requirng very little renovation. It came from a defunct hardware store in Jacksonville, TX. All I've ever done is put furniture polish on it.

Any interest out there?

Let me know if you would like pictures.

Well, since this thread got a new life - I sure hope he kept it original. I thought of putting a baseboard around it also and would attach it with the least amount of invasion as possible. It is what it is, that is why it is.
