All About Pocket Knives

Sometimes the Ebay gods smile on you and you can snag a great knife as a just listed Buy It Now, this happened the other day with this Ulster balloon jack.

Got it today and other than some age corrosion and a small pin crack it is in amazing condition, I would say unused. Still has a strong blade etch, says Tredway's Wizard Hand Hammered. 3 5/8, single spring, amazing construction with no blade rub and great snaps. Tang stamp is Ulster Knife Co. NY

Anyone have any idea when this one dates from or what or who TredWay's was?

John I just did a quick search on google and apparently Treadway was a hardware company in Dubuque Iowa and Wizard was one of their markings. They were in business in one form or another from around 1853 to 1987. Great Find Lloyd

Did I get the pattern name correct, balloon? Kind of unusual with serpentine shape on the blade side and swell center on the back spring side.

John that is fantastic! You REALLY lucked out on that, hardly ever see them come up in that condition. I believe what you have there is a Norfolk pattern, and an incredible one at that. You defined it perfectly with your description. I believe doing it this way gives a bit more room for a wider blade since the hump above the center pin is far less pronounced when compared to a straight serpentine. A balloon pattern would be swelled on the front edge as well as the back. Congrats!!!!

Eric, thanks for the info, it does share some characteristics of a Norfolk pattern, another pattern I found that it is similar to is a Humpback.

I think it fits the description of a Eureka pattern.

As single spring knives are my favorite, i must say that this is one of the finest knives i have ever seen.

John, i would like to see one additional picture: blades closed, side on view from directly overhead. want to see: common joints ? how much above frame is corner of tang ?

Awesome knife and pattern John ... that knife just shows old time beauty in and no doubt a great find ... I believe within the last year I saw another knife of a different pattern with the same etch and a completely different maker for sure... I seem to remember it was a CT or MA maker... know for sure I have seen the etch but not sure what knife
