That takes me back! (Remember, I served when thy were still issuing the Mark 1 Deck Knife on board ship). The Vietnam War period is when they stopped issuing these Deck Knives. This is too bad because these were more than ample for the "unpacking" jobs on most of the smaller ships.

Today, they are issuing the US Navy Deck Knife Mark 2 (a sheath knife with a more "battle oriented" blade profile). IMHO, it wasn't needed. The Mark 1 was more than up to the job.

This is what the sheaths look like;standard Mk.8(I believe that is the number).

They were issued in leather sheaths too. Both right and left hand.

Here are two new old stock ones I bought.

Wrapped in three layers, and covered in tar. Note, shipped without a sheath.

That is a handsome knife! I love the Mark 1 Deck Knife and have for many years. (Being an old sailor, there is a special bond between myself and the old Mark 1). These old knives spent more time cutting straps and opening crates than in battle, but since they were based on the hunting knives of the late 1920's, they were top notch in the field as well.

Trust me, that old PAL has a lot of service life left in it. Kabar is the only one coming close to the original Carbon Steel of the originals (Originals were 1095, new Kabar knives are 1095 Chromium-Vanadium steel). I love my Kabar!

Hang onto that PAL, it is a "keeper".

I love my ka-bar too, but the blade grind of the deck knife make it a much better hunting and cooking knife. My dad had one sheath knife his whole life. Took him from Boyscouts to a lifetime of hunting & fishing.

It was a Pal deck knife, and it is the sharpest most loved knife I've ever held.

Maybe the best of both worlds is the KaBar deck knife. But my favorite will always be the Pal made one, like the OP 's.
