I include the last pic here which shows part of the tube insert, where it tells the "story" of post-2004 Schrade knives being "moved to Camillus, NY" as we're all aware. But I think we came to the conclusion when investigating one of these trappers that it wasn't a Camillus knife and presumably the paperwork was used for both Utica and Camillus "Schrades"?

Or am I completely off my rocker on this one? The frame looks strikingly similar to a Utica muskrat I have. So either I'm reading this knife way wrong or Utica's "Schrades" used the same packaging as Camillus's.

Looking forward to any of you Schrade gurus dropping some knowledge on this neophyte.

Utica could be right and bear & son could have possibly made it as well. I don't really know for sure but those two brands have their "look", which is similar and this one is likely of that type. For all I know bear & son and utica could be the same

Tsar, I've seen those identified as being built by Utica before - they do have the "look". Orvet or Ozzie Marie are the experts (there are others here as well). Nice looking - looks like a 897UH pattern or Case 6318 pattern - my favorite EDC size. OH

Sure looks Utica to me.

Here's a photo of a Utica made stockman. The handles are a different color but the blades, frame, and shield all look like a match to the OP knife to my eyes.

My dad, when not preferring his swiss army, has an 897uh that he uses. He's not a knife guy but does like them to some degree like most guys do. In fact I have his 897 in my sharpening "queue" right now.

I am 99.99% sure that that knife was made by Utica.
The Bear & Sons knives usually do not have handle pins.

I with Dale on this one .
I had some trappers with same handle material with the same the Schrade Walden tang stamp.I had another member send the measurements of a Utica trapper and it was the same measurements ,same handle material.

I believe it to be a Utica, also; I also believe that Utica bought some Camillus machinery used to make knives when Camillus folded. No Bear and Son knives look anything like this knife, and, as Dale has mentioned, they don't use handle pins.

Knife was made by Utica - see the photo attached from the Utica website.

As other posters have noted, Bear made some Schrades for Taylor, but Bear knives look completely different. One correction though - Bear does use handle pins on some models in some handle materials.

Mr. Red Felt posted the red version of this knife earlier tonight. They keep popping up in Schrade searches. I'm a fan of some of the recent Utica knives (as long as they pass QC) but these are just noise trying to get the signal of some genuine Schrades.

Though I have to admit that serialized trapper set is really nice, and this knife would look good paired with the red sibling.

Thanks for the input and information, everyone! I still have next to no confidence in my ability to read some of these post-Schrade knives, even though I own a decent number of Bear, Utica and Camillus knives as it is. With Bear I expect a certain 'crudeness' in the bolsters and grinds, Utica seems a little more refined, but these are just subjective notes and not really definitive or quantifiable... YMMV, as always!
