All About Pocket Knives

I'm curious as to what is the most highly valued old pocket knife out there, is there anything realistically worth as much as 5 figures? I know some things like old switches and case tested 5375 or 6375 long pull in minty shape are worth well more than a grand, but is that the upper echelon?

Paul a 6488 Case Congress recently sold for $14,000. There are are some custom knives that have sold for much more. The highest I have seen was 2.1 million.

Here's the Buster Warinski custom that sold for 2.1 million dollars.

Here's another one we discussed here on AAPK with historical significance. A Tiffany Buffalo Skinners set for $25,000.

Cal I seem to remember another one we talked about for $56,000 but I can't recall what that was. Also do you remember what the guy wanted for that Holley Charter Oak

I believe a Teddy Roosevelt knife was auctioned off last year. I do not know what it went for. I think that would probably be expensive. Maybe someone knows what it went for. I would like to know.

I think that the knives need to be in various categories. A custom made knife over a hundred years old by a known maker and maybe owned by a historical person is one category. A production run knife made in a factory over a hundred years ago but with unknown provenance is another category. Lots of other categories, but those are pretty well separated. I would be interested in learning the maximum price of a factory made knife without any history. Who actually pays $500 for a pocket knife, no matter how desirable?

Mel if you are talking about a brand new run of the mill factory built knife I would agree 5 bills would be hard to chunk down. But many of the Case-Bose collaborations sell for over that and I would consider those worth it. As far as some of the older folders $500 is a drop in the bucket.

Voyles live auction about 10 years ago at Parkers Show a Case green bone 6488 hammered down at 13000 plus 10% buyers premium.For those mathematicly challenged that's $14300.Supposely a auction record for a Case pocket knife.

That is along the lines I was wondering. A factory made, not unique (when it was made) knife. Still seems incredible, but I try not to argue with reality!

I would rather have a nice old knife that is worth $500.00 than 50 $10.00 knives. That is just me. Somehow I have some of both.

I remember the article that Buster wrote for the magazine that featured that knife. As I recall he spent two and one half YEARS constructing it and I forget how many POUNDS of gold he used in the process.I think he said he would NEVER attempt something like that again.Apparently gold can be very difficult to work with and can become unworkable. His biggest hassle was learning the granulation process(making and adhering those tiny gold spheres to the knife).

I'm with you on that, only problem is I don't have any $500 knives. I did just buy one for $272, I've never spent that much on a single knife before.

Yes, that too.

I have a $500 knife but it only cost me (less than) $5 some 50 years ago when I bought it. I had no idea what it's value was until 7 or 8 years ago. In fact, I questioned it's legitimacy up until I started researching it.

The most I've ever spent on a knife was $150. It just about took the stuffin' out of me the first time I spent $80 for a knife (GEC).

Hey you big spenders. How about showing some of those $500 knives.
