All About Pocket Knives

Is there any way to date this I*XL hunter closer than the tang stamp would suggest 1890-1971. I have read that the factory where it was made is helpful in dating but how does one determine that.

Greg that is a nice knife and a old one. If you could get ahold of smiling knife he would know. He doesn't post much anymore. I pm him and he got back to me, but it took a few days. A good guy and knows his knives.

Will do Dave. I was thinking with those hammered steel pins it might be on the early end of that spectrum.

Greg - nice knife and popular Wostenholm pattern if you check this thread there is some good info as to possible age: http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... ostenholm- - on page 2 Mason notes some pattern history and the lock backs that are more "proud" I understand tend to be older - but you are no doubt in the right time frame - post 1890 if indeed England is stamped on the blade... As another aside - I heard it is pretty hard to date Wostenholms by the stamp though I think those with Celebrated Cutlery, Washington Works etc on the stamp may indicate older Wostenholms but I am not sure

Lee I had looked at that post earlier but it was difficult getting the whole thing read while starring at those beautiful stag handles on your knife.

My thoughts on hammered pins were 1923 and earlier on USA knives. I think these would be about the same.

Thank you Harold! That's a tremendous help.

Far from an expert on dating anything(except myself when I say something stupid)but I would say it dated to around 1880-1900.I believe a lot of their knives were stamped England before it was required by the USA in 1891.JMHO

Nice old knife. England dates it to after 1891. The pattern was produced for a number of years. The tang stamp appears similar to this one from the 1930s. The stamp is also is similar to a WWI military knife I have. I think your knife dates from early 1900 to 1930s.

I’d firstly like to say thanks for the add! I also have a knife by said maker was curious as to its age. Thinking around the Great War period but, not sure. Canadian proofed. Could you help?
