All About Pocket Knives

I know condition, condition, condition. Buy the best you can afford or find for your collection. You hear it all the time. Some collectors are very disciplined and can wait years even decades to acquire a particular knife for their collection in "mint" condition, nothing wrong with that.

Unfortunately I am not one of those people A guy called me a couple weeks ago and wanted to get rid of all these unsightly old pocket knives, all in need of repair or for parts only. The list of problems are as follows, no snap, broken blade/blades, missing shield, cracked handle, broken back spring, etc. etc.

So like the sucker that I am, I bought all of them, about 50, and some old loose parts like shields and bails, bone handles.

Here's some of my pile of junk for your viewing pleasure.

Broken or not, a pile that would be very enjoyable to ruffle through.

Don't see ANY junk in there Dimitri;would have jumped on those in a heart beat!2 Bullets and a toe!

What is that long skinny one next to the wrench knife? A Russell Daddy Barlow? How about some names? PUHHLEASE!!!!

Thanks Ray, actually there's three bullets! One has a missing shield.

Some of the names are Robeson, Ulster, Case, Russell, Winchester, etc...

You better lock your door, Dimitri, Glennbad will be there soon wanting some of those shields.

The long ebony handle knife is an American Shear & Knife Co., blade snapped off an inch up from the tang the handles are perfect and tight lock up!

That is one sweet looking knife;even if it is damaged. Is that a WR Case military knife next to the toe on the right?

Thanks Ray, it was probably snapped off pretty early in its life because the rest of the knife looks hardly used.

Yeah, MB, I figured as much, but the bone on the one at upper left is very recognizable.

Thanks for the reply D; I have a beautiful little Burkinshaw tuxedo with pearl scales that looks new but one blade is snapped off. Likely a flaw in the heat treating. I have two of those WWI knives;a W.R.Case that someone re-profiled the blade so badly I hadto put a small piece of wood under the tang to keep the blade open far enough to use the nail mark. The other one is a Schatt& Morgan.

Nice pile Dimitri ... despite issues with them one can see some beauty in each of them ... I have a few and despite having some criteria for myself that evolved over time since I started in terms of condition and as you allude to in the OP... Brimfield as you know in my few years of searching has more broken knives than good ones in my experience though some good ones can be found when you are lucky - most are heartbreakers when you see the knife and it is a maker you want... Here is one Brimfield find for me - a Holley with the natural "I" material but like many of yours snapped off above nail nick on pen blade (and I also found a Waterville MOP pen with a unique curved shield and that one had cracks in the MOP and the master was snapped at the nail nick but smaller blade was good - don't have a pic of that one at the moment) - but at the price of literally $1 who would leave these knives sitting in a cigar box pile.... not me

Nice piles of parts you are gathering

So, tell me, if a parts knife is kept in a knife roll, is it still a parts knife? Or, must a knife be relegated to a cigar box, or such, to be a parts knife?

Of course I can't speak for others, but I keep my parts knives in fishing tackle trays, in plastic boxes, cigar boxes, drawers, laying on counters and my workbench. Pretty much anywhere I can find a place to put some parts knives, is where I put them.
