All About Pocket Knives

Been trying to learn some knife repair skills, just because I'm interested, and have a few to practice on. Now, I've never been a huge Barlow fan, but, been going through the Venerable Barlow thread, there are some pretty knives in there. I have a Camillus Barlow whose blades were both pinched inwards, toward each other, and no amount of oiling was helping them close on their own. I guess I understand the basic idea of crinking, didn't really want to break a blade, but, this was a knife I got in a lot buy (no wonder), little to lose, so....jump in with both feet! Using a variety of makeshift tools, because I'm NOT a knife repairman, so I make do with what's at hand---like a tinner's hammer (for sheet metal work, too big for the job, but, it worked), angle iron on my trailer outside for a stiddy (trying to keep the noise down in the house, significant other is sleeping), I either got very lucky, or accumulated life experiences allowed me to correctly "feel" what I was doing, and I have a functional, albeit cheap, Barlow to carry. I'm quite pleased with this, though I wish the blade was a little fuller, it takes a great edge. I'll smile a little everyday I slip this one into my pocket. Thanks for looking!

Nice results! I too have broken a knife blade or two trying to crink them...

IF was your first attempt and it was successful, then you are miles ahead of rest of us!
But don't be discouraged if you break the next 3 in a row.

What is crinking?

It's bending of the blade (or blades) so that it fits smoothly and fully into the bladewell of the knife. Good question, Bob.

Great work .... seems from the comments above it can be a bit "hit & miss" (sorry about that)

I've had a couple of goes at it but seems I'm way too timid & gentle swinging the hammer.

Would some one give a thumb nail sketch on what is done on crinking, and a quick procedure on the process? Thanks
