Case xx Rough black knives

Decided I will start to create an Mint xx/tested era collection, rough black scales. Prefer mint knives but I know there are several patterns that are extremely hard to find due to the work horse aspect of the rough black handled knives, I assume these were heavily used due to the cheaper price.

I don't have an endless supply of money so please, looking for a fair deal here ;)

You probably already know there are some good XX examples listed on eBay at present. The one's that I happened to see are desirable patterns so likely will get bid up.

I also like the Case rough black handled knives. I always heard rough black was used at Case for handle material during the WW2 time period because of the scarcity of bone. I've wondered about that story since rubber was scarce at that time also. I'm not sure if knives produced with it were any cheaper at the time. ::shrug::

BTW some of the Case old-timers called it "gum-fuddy".

I appreciate the info! Those are some cool facts about them! Still don't own any. Just recently started liking them, I had a few in the past but they never did much for me

First time I heard the term gum-fuddy was from Bob Farquharson, probably 15 or so years ago at least. I had shown him a couple of rough black knives from my pile and said something about wishing Case still made them. Bob was retired from Case at the time and had moved to North Texas (near Henrietta) after he retired. When I showed him the knives he chuckled and said "gum-fuddy!" As I recall, he said everyone at Case hated the stuff. Then about 5 years ago they re-introduced it but I think Bob had passed away by then.

Sorry XXTestedXX, didn't mean to hijack your want ad. ::facepalm:: Hope you find someone that has some they're willing to part with.

I just turned up a Case XX 6233 in very nice, unused condition with a few carbon spots. PM me if interested.
