All About Pocket Knives

I need help trying to find out specifics on this knife. I never had one. so i had to buy it. I did a translator to english but did not discover much. I checked ebay and found two like this one for over 200.00 dollars listed. But the tangs are different. At this point i hope its not a china spin off. It does have horn handles. I like the knife and wish to know more about it. I seems to have good quality. Any help will be appreciated. I hope its not a 20 dollar knife.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I guess somebody has to do it. I fear your knife is from China or maybe even Pakistan.

Because:

Laguiole is not a brand but a village in France. All authentic knives will have the word France or Made in France stamped on it someplace and will have the Shepard's Cross on the handle. Yours has neither. That said, neither of mine have the Shepard's Cross on them.

The 440 on the tang is typical of knives coming out of China

Le Couteau De Laguiole translates to "The Laguiole Knife", again not something an authentic Laguiole would have on it.

The bull on the blade is another indicator of a knife sourced in a Pacific Rim country along with the poor file work on the back spring and the poor rendering of the "bee".

These are the two I have. The Laguole Rossignol is not a genuine Laguole because it was made in Theirs France instead of Laguole but they are both made in France.

Unless you have a butt load of money tied up in them, don't take it too hard. It happens to most of us sooner or later. The genuine ones go for around $80 and up, sometimes waay up.

Jerry, your definition of a Laguiole as a knife of a certain design made in Laguiole France. I toured around France in 1993 and of course visited many knife stores. Every village has one. The shop owners proudly showed me Laguiole knives that were made in various places in France. Every shop keeper said the same: these are all Laguiole knives so they use the word for the pattern as long as it is made in France.
To me the telltale feature of the O.P. knife is the poor file work on the spine. A real Laguiole will have more intricate filework.

Well even the French can't agree on the pronunciation of Laguiole. How do you expect them to agree on the definition for the knives.

I think it has become like Kleenex for facial tissues and IBM for computers.

Edit: After further thought, I don't know what you would call them if you didn't call them a Laguiole.
