Birthday Case Display nicely filled

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

Birthday Case Display nicely filled

Post by gsmith7158 »

I got this Case Display for my birthday and selected six of my better knives for it.
These cases are available from Shepard Hills and they make a stunning display. I would highly recommend them.

The antique knives look especially good displayed in the frame! ::tu:: Does the case have a felt or foam pad that the glass presses the knives into?

That's a really good looking display. I'm a little concerned about the knives. Do the ones with opposing blades on a single spring have half stops so they aren't putting double pressure on the spring. They will sit like that for a while before they snap the spring in half. A friend on mine, after I told him not to do that, displayed an antique knife with the blades half opened and it lasted a couple weeks. When it popped, his wife was standing next to it and the pop scared her out of a couple years of old age.___Dave

Dave, Thanks for that warning. I changed the display up a little to avoid that situation.

Thanks. I hate to see any old knife die even if it isn't mine. Some of the new Queen knives have been snapping with only one blade open.___Dave

Dave, is that first hand information or did that come from the boys down at the barbershop (the male rumor mill)?

Ya got me worried now Dave. I've been down in the Knife room revamping my entire display collection for about an hour now.

Nice display. How much do they get for one of those?

I am with Dave for sure. Fully opened, closed or at half stop only if it was my setup. Basically, nothing with spring tension.

Nice looking display and knives.

No that's first hand, but I believe it was limited to some trappers they made a few years back. My knife club ordered about 50 of them and 5 or 6 that I know of were returned. Several came new in the box with snapped springs and one snapped when I opened it, and several more broke with-in a year or two. I was in charge of ordering and returning them.___Dave

That's a very nice looking display case, great knives and a wonderful birthday present. I agree with what the other guys have said I wouldn't leave them with pressure on the back springs.

Greg,
The display really looks great, a nice case for a bunch of Cases, great birthday gift ::tu:: !
The point brought up about storing a knife with a spring under tension has been discussed here on the forum before and it is just logical that any piece of metal should be stored at rest rather than under constant tension. Seems the manufacturers should know better than make the fancy little boxes with the blades half cocked to avoid problems for customers. I recall a neighbor lady, a widow, brought a couple of knives to show me a year or so ago. I don't remember the brand of the one in the fancy presentation box, but the back spring was broken when she opened the box, it had always been stored in the partially open position :( . I know this is may be considered redundant, but maybe it will cause some one to rescue a knife from potential destruction.

Oh Thanks Greg. Looking good and even I'm going to sleep good tonight. Funny how us knife collectors think and feel a need to protect every bodies knives. I bought an old extremely rare stamped knife in rough shape a few years ago, and the pictures made the rounds on AAPK. A guy I asked to authenticate the knife actually sent me the new scales it needed because he wanted to make sure I fixed it correctly and wanted to know who I was having it fixed by. He signed off on my plans. I love this family I wandered into. ___Dave

Looks good my friend! Not as sexy as with the blades partially open but much safer of course.

I may pick up one of those displays. Really don't like to have my real good knives out but I have some displayed singly around the house, lying on shelves and whatnot. I do like seeing those and grab and handle those from time to time.

Will likely do a display with single blade knives if I do it, likely some of my spare swing guards.

Enjoy your gift and your fine knives.

Regards, Jerry
