All About Pocket Knives

Giving AAPK a day or so lead time before i throw these up on Ebay.

First is a gorgeous Fallkniven Tk3 with "Drowned Oak" covers.
Bought this about a year ago, carried it a little bit, it's gorgeous but it doesn't really fit into my EDC usage as much as I though it would.

Probably the most precisely built lockback I've ever held in my hands. 100% perfect lock engagement, zero blade play, absolutely pristine construction.

3G is a laminate steel. It's Takefu's Super Gold Powder steel (SGPS) in the middle with VG2 on the outside. The handle material is oak dug up and reclaimed from old wooden dams. Beautiful stuff with these silver streaks through it in the right light. Ships with the original wood box, original sheath and a (not fancy at all) leather pocket slip I made for it.Sharpened once and man, it's scary how SGPS takes an edge.

The Case Slimlock, introduced first in 2005, was a definite departure from “Traditional” Case Knives. Unlike the traditional Case stainless steel offerings, the Slimlock featured premium, American made BG-42 – a stainless steel originally designed for toughness, stability and corrosion resistance in high performance ball bearings

The original bone handle scales were removed and replaced with absolutely stunning sycamore lace. I bought just a few small blocks of this wood back in 2006ish, had it professionally stabilized by K&G, and have spent the last 10 years kicking myself for not buying every single splinter of it available at the time. The colors shift and dance in the light, ranging from a light honey color to root beer brown, with gorgeous silver web running throughout.

The Slimlock is the ultimate “black tie” gent's knife. Limited production (and in this case, 1 of 1), high end materials and above board design.

Some beauties Adam. I'm more of a traditional older CASE folder collector. That is normally what I EDC also.
I really don't know too much about steel. What can you tell me about Edge retention and ease of sharpening assuming the knife is still available? That knife is really classy and I'm interested to hear about the blade steel. Depending on the answer I'm very interested but don't do ebay often in case it is up for sale there now. Please let me know.

It's listed now, But I'd always take a hit for an AAPK buyer.

BG-42 is in my opinion, the "super steel" that missed the boat. It was originally made by Latrobe, but not in quantities or formats that made it conducive to the knifemaking industry. Composition is:
1.15% Carbon
0.30% Silicon
0.50% Manganese
14.50% Chromium
4.00% Molybdenum
1.20% Vanadium

It's a double melt VIM/VAR steel, so it's extremely clean, and it's chemistry allows it to be very high wear. It's in the same class of steels as CM154, but with the added vanadium, it forms small Vanadium carbides, in addition to the larger chromium carbides you see in most other steels in it's class. Smaller carbides allow it to take a keener edge, and offset some of the problems of carbide tearout. It was originally designed for high precision aerospace bearings and has corrosion resistance that's higher, as tested, than other common cutlery steels like VG-10 and ATS-34.

Chris Reeve used it with his Sebenza line for a while, as he felt it was a superior choice to ATS-34 and CM154 at the time, and Strider used it on some of the SMF folders, but with the availability problems, when S-30v showed up on the scene, nearly everyone, custom makers included, jumped ship. This was right before the "super steel" phase really hit the production and semi-production knife market, as a result, the "baseline' high performance steel became S30v, and the newer CMP versions of older steels, while BG-42 "missed the boat" and is relegated to an interesting, but still high end, footnote.

Not afraid to cut with any knife I carry but that would not likely see heavy chores (but ya never know) although I am very sure it is capable. I am interested and wil take it assuming you accept other than paypal.

Jerry, I don't think you will regret that BG-42.
I had a Buck 110 with a BG-42 blade from the Buck Custom Shop.
Really scary sharp!!!

Cool Dale. Good info in addition to Adam's reply. I like scary sharp. Just don't know much about steel as I said. Appreciate the info much. Good to know. Such a beauty too. I love carrying functional and good looking knives.

Sharpening up BG-42 isn't that bad, thanks to the fine grain structure. Not knowing what your preference for sharpening is, I'll tell you that compared to contemporaries like 154CM, it'll sharpen a bit easier thanks to the smaller carbides. It mirror polishes extremely well. Like most other carbide heavy steels, it does benefit substantially from ceramic or diamond plates.

Honestly, it reminds me of sharpening D2. It's not "fun", but it's tons easier to work with than S30V or S35VN, that's for sure.

LOL. I have a big CASE XX Hunter for yard work. If that don' t cut it (literally) time to head to the shed.

Yes please. Scary sharp. Shave hair, to the bone and thru it if possible. I appreciate your doing that for me.
