JBinILL, I looked in Tweedales Directory of Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers and in Goins. No mention of Merit & Co in either. Looks like a good old knife.

The Green River stamping was used by a lot of English companies when the Russell knives became popular.Russell used this stamping as early as the 1830's but the English ones I believe date to around the American Civil War era and after;probably to about 1900.

There is an American Import company of that name listed in Goins' and Levines but that is Merit Import Co. They dealt in German knives though.

I know nothing about it, but it sure is a good looking old knife.
