All About Pocket Knives

I purchased a few kissing crane pocket knives on ebay. After receiving them I saw that on the box it said "China" on it. Does anyone know if some kissing crane knives are made in China or are they just imported from China? If so is this an a junk knife like all Chinese knives? I was under the impression that all kissing crane knives are from Soligen Germany. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Those look remarkably like the Owlheads.
Some of the newer ones are most probably at least assembled in China...maybe with German produced parts...maybe not.
They're not junk...but they don't have quality heat-treating, in my experience, so they don't really make for a good working knife.

Yeah, I second that. It's hard to tell where some knives are made these days. Really suspicious of many brands where the origins seem to be hidden. US Classics are MADE IN CHINA FOR SALT RIVER,KY.

Here is one seller (authorized distributor for U.S. Classic Knives) let's you believe that they are made in Kentucky, does not specify where RR's are from and I think this is the same guy that Owl Heads were made in Germany, now he just says they are imported.

The one Kissing Crane I have is a Brown Mule small sodbuster type knife made in Italy. Looks well made and feels good in my hand but I have not sharpened it so I don't know how good the steel is. It has a small tiny rust spot on the blade so I assume it is carbon steel.

I do know there are a lot of knife manufacturers going to china. They may not be going 100% but they are all trying to compete with the cheap knife. I would think to make it cheap it would all be made there. You have to watch every brand you buy. The price is the first give away. Not all sellers or suppliers are stating where the the knife is made. In some cases the seller himself may not have that information until he gets a boxful.
If you do a search for the brand companies they will state where they are located and where the knives are made. the sites I found that were in the U.S. proudly stated that. If they don't say or beat around the bush you can guess they aren't made here or Germany. I don't know the quality of knives coming from Spain, Italy or other countries. The knives you bought are probably worth what you paid for them but not a deal on a German made knife.

From what I have heard, United Cutlery was having them sourced in Germany prior to their recent bankruptcy. In the new reconfigured United Cutlery, they are having them sourced (at least partly, but maybe all) in China to cut costs.

Incidentally, the old United Cutlery was also the company that imported the Henckels line of folders by license out of Germany. I don't know what will happen with that line. So far, to my knowledge, nobody has gotten the license for Henckels folders in this country yet.
