All About Pocket Knives

The Texans are keeping me busy making skinners! This gentleman saw my last walrus bone skinner on Blade Forums and hit me up for this one. He likes a little heavier blade than I prefer myself, but hey, that's just me.

This one is S30V stainless steel at 61rc, 8" OAL with a 3.75" blade and it ended up around .175 thick at the choil. Scary sharp......... Don't look to close at my botched leather tooling job, it got a little "random" there at the end!

That's a real good looking knife, Gary. Of all it's great qualities, the tapered tang does it for me.

I do like that blade profile, but, man....that IS a heavy blade on that bad boy. It's a bit too thick for what I'd want, guess it don't matter, it's not my knife. Nice work, regardless.

Though the blade may be thicker than you & I might like, you gave the customer what he wanted and as a knife maker, that is the name of the game!

I love that walrus bone, it works up so nice and it's really tough stuff. A bit pricey...........yea, but there aren't many out there handled with this stuff. I have 9 sets left.......

That skinner is a beauty, Gary! I kind of like the thicker blade, though I am not sure how it would affect skinning. What is the reason for the tapered tang? To save weight overall or to shift the balance further forward? It certainly makes for a unique feature on an already unique knife.

Beautiful knife. I'm guessing the thick blade would work just fine down south. I tried using one like that to field dress a deer at 5 below zero, and the fat on the blade froze on the blade and it wouldn't cut anything. I was stuck out in the field with a $600 knife and a deer that needed work scratching my head on what to do.___Dave

Thanks Mel! The blade is .174-5, it's not real thick but I generally like them around .125 for a hunter/skinner. This gentleman that's buying this one prefers a heavier blade. Exactly, the taper helps balance the knife (plus it looks cool.) Some folks skeletonize the tang some taper. This bone is a little heavy so it's necessary for a good balance, especially with the thicker blade material.



Thank you Dave! Froze the fat to the blade..............now that's cold!! Was the blade you were using hollow ground or convex? This one is hollow ground on a 14" wheel so of course it goes from nearly zero at the edge and graduates up to the spine. I'm guessing half way up the blade it's no thicker than .85-90

That sheath looks just fine ,it has a Musical touch.

I think of the old Dexter skinning knives we used at the butcher shop in the 70s.Just the skinning part and the curved blade.
